Most Underrated Soundtrack?
Spin-off meme! I've been meaning to start this thread too.
Singles, Reality Bites, Dazed & Confused, O, Brother Where Art Thou? = everyone's got 'em. And rightly so, they're great. But what obscure soundtrack do you own that's not weird, per se, but just surprisingly awesome?
Stereogum's? The Jackal. Never saw the movie; heard it was shit. But check the tracklist:
01. Fatboy Slim - "Going Out of My Head"I will never tire of these:
02. Prodigy - "Poison"
03. Massive Attack - "Superpredators (Metal Postcard)"
04. Primal Scream - "Star"
05. Bush - "Swallowed (Goldie/Toasted On Both Sides Mix)"
06. Ani Difranco - "Joyful Girl (Peace And Love Mix)"
07. Moby - "Shining"
08. Dolls Head - "It's Over, It's Under"
09. Black Grape - "Get Higher"
10. Goldie And J. Majik - "Sunray 2"
11. BT Featuring Richard Butler - "Shineaway"
12. Agent Provocateur - "Red Tape"
13. The Charlatans UK - "Toothache (Chemical Bros Remix)"
14. Lunatic Calm - "Leave You Far Behind"
15. Apollo Four Forty - "Raw Power"
16. L.T.J. Bukem - "Demon's Theme"
BT & Richard Butler - "Shineaway" (MP3 Link Expired)
Primal Scream - "Star" (MP3 Link Expired)
And that Black Grape tune, which subverts a Ronald Reagan anti-drug speech, is just hilarious.

I think the soundtrack for Underworld certainly holds the biggest "quality of soundtrack compared to quality of movie" discrepancy. A quick search turned up a rather interesting CMT.com article about the soundtrack. Here's a relevant quote:
"For the past six months, Danny Lohner — a producer, multi-instrumentalist and member of Nine Inch Nails —
has been quietly bringing together artists like David Bowie, ex-Limp Bizkit guitarist Wes Borland, Filter mastermind Richard Patrick, A Perfect Circle members Josh Freese and Maynard James Keenan, and Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante."
I mean, any one of them is absolutely amazing; take Josh Freese, for instance. Another google quote: "was recently presented with the key to Los Angeles when the Mayor declared July 24th "Josh Freese Day" in Los Angeles". And then all these people went and created songs with a kind of free-love-play-with-anyone procedure, informally laying down the tracks all in the artists' home studios. Kindof like the Broken Social Scene of movie soundtracks.
Other than that, I'd have to chime in with the Lost Highway statement.

Ah, yeah -- Singles. Smashing Pumpkins's "Drown" is awesome. And the two Pearl Jam songs alone are worth it.
I was always fond of the "Who's the Man?" soundtrack. But I was also a loser suburban kid who liked House of Pain, so that doesn't really count.

I know this may not be that cool, but the soundtrack to Party Monster has some cool stuff on it. Definietly not the best one I own, but the most random. Never saw the movie, just randomly bought it at a used record store, partly because it was six bucks, also because it had a non-album track by the Scissor Sisters. And damn do I like the Scissor Sisters.
Score = 0
The soundtrack to the movie "SCRAPPLE" is the absolute shit. All '70s obscure folk jams.

Beautiful Girls
the movie was quite cheesy but it was a Greg Dulli currated soundtrack
had Afghan Whigs doing a Barry White tune
a touching (!?) Ween tune
Sweet Caroline by Neil fucking Diamond
Beth by Kiss
...then again it had Chris Issac and teh singer from Fine Young Cannibals

Here's a second vote for "I Shot Andy Warhol," especially Bettie Serveert doing Dylan...and I'd like to nominate "Times Square." I never saw the movie, but a friend loaned me the soundtrack when I was just a squirt, and it was the first place I heard the Cure, XTC and Roxy Music. That's gotta count for something.

The soundtracks to Dead Man on Campus and Go are pretty damn good too.

Only somewhat obscure (it accompanies a Wim Wenders film, after all), but the soundtrack to "The End of Violence" - introspective, wistful, low-key, interestingly diverse (and definitely awesome) - has gotta be up there:

2. Shouldn't You Know - [spoken by] Traci Lind
3. Every Time I Try - Spain
4. Untitled Heavy Beat (Part 1 & 2) - DJ Shadow

I Swear to Sufjan that the first thing that came to mind was "Batman Forever" - the first cd I ever bought. Looking at the track list (I haven't burned it to my pc yet), every song is at least good, and a some are great (like the Flaming Lips one). There's even a scary Michael Hutchence cover of "The Passenger."
I think i love everything about Grosse Point Blank, too: the movie, the soundtrack, and the giant poster that's still rolled up in my closet soewhere. There was a vol. 2 to the soundtrack, but I never bought that one.

I can't believe no one has mentioned "A Mighty Wind: The Album." Worth it for the folk version of "Start Me Up."
And really, "A Mighty Wind" is just a tongue-in-cheek folk version of the amazingly kickass "Spinal Tap" soundtrack.

If we are talking about soundtracks that are obscure, i was surprised that the soundtrack to "Friday Night Lights" didn't get talked about more than it did.
Aside from 2 other decent instrumental guitar tracks, it's essentially just a fantastic Explosions In The Sky album.
And anyone in their late teens/early 20s who did not own the "Space Jam" soundtrack was definitely not sitting at the cool kids' lunch table.

obscure? sntrk for Walls in the City all by the Denison-Kimbal Trio... a low budget and if I remember correctly (it's been years) marginally unwatchable flic starring David Yow... but the soundtrack... jittery guitar jazz (as in a caffinated wes montgomery)... from fellow jesus lizarder Duane Denison. The sound of steam rising from a street grate at 4:30 am.

Nashville Soundtrack
From the Robert Altman classic, none of the songs are indie songs or whatever, but it is huge in the alt-country community. On a tribute album to the movie, TWO members of New Pornographers (Carl Newman and Neko Case) sang their praises (terrible wordplay, I know).
Now for Magnolia and Boogie Nights:
Magnolia was the first great Aimee Mann album.
Boogie Nights (Part 1 and 2 of the soundtrack) had great 70s and 80s songs - not songs from the usual suspects (Bee Gees, Donna Summer), but under-the-radar gems from The Move and Melanie. Plus, the beginning excerpt from the movie ("Heat will rock you") and the bonus Dirk Diggler cover of Stan Bush's song for the Transformers movie ("You've Got the Touch") make it all worthwhile.

Crime & Punishment in Suburbia is an excellent soundtrack--it's got Frank Black, Sleater-Kinney, and Modest Mouse. The rest of it is full of mostly unknown artists, but their songs are great anyway--especially "sand" by Op8.

I concur with whomever brought up "Judgement Night". Faith No More, and the Boo-Yaa Tribe collabo? C'mon now. Unfortunately the film was as entertaining as a paper cut.
Far and away the best: The Life Aquatic soundtrack. The scene with the Stooges song rules and the "Ping Island" song will forever be embedded in my feeble brain.

girl's town soundtrack is worth it for queen latifah's "u.n.i.t.y" - who you calling a bitch?
groove soundtrack is cool for the last song, this really melodic, rave track by alter-ring called "Infinitely Gentle Blows"
some more shout outs to magnolia (above) and some kind of wonderful!

I really like the First Love, Last Rights soundtrack. All of the songs are written and performed by Shutter to Think, but with different guest vocalists like Jeff Buckley and Liz Phair. Overall, the soundtrack sounds pretty dreamy, like hot weather night music.

The BADLANDS soundtrack, which I suspect is nonexistent. It has a bit from Carl Orff's "Musica Poetica" that may be the most beautiful thing imaginable - it's respectfully payed homage to in Lynne Ramsay's RATCATCHER and egregiously ripped off in Tarantino/Scott's TRUE ROMANCE. I suspect the only reason Aphex Twin's "Goon Gumpas" is used in Ramsay's follow-up MORVERN CALLAR is because of it's similarity to the Orff composition.

But one that's slipped through is "Songs in the Key of X". What, no 'Labyrinth' soundtrack? The first half is gloriously Bowie-tastic, and the second half... well, you can skip it.
'The Last Unicorn', all music by America. Incredibly dorky, but one of my favorite flicks as a kid.
'Hype!' had a great soundtrack that stood on its own without the film. I can't recommend either one enough. A great documentary about Seattle in the early 90s.
Hype! tracklisting:
1. K Street - Fastbacks
2. Return of the Rat - Wipers
3. Dig It A Hole - U-Men
4. Swallow My Pride - Green River
5. Nothing To Say - Soundgarden

Lost Highway, A Life Less Ordinary, Love and a .45, Stealing Beauty -- all excellent.
Curdled is probably not a movie for all tastes (although Angela Jones, aka Esmeralda Villalobos in Pulp Fiction, is completely adorable in it), but the soundtrack is a completely fantastic collection of Latin music. Not a bad song on it, even if you're not necessarily a fan of the genre.
1. Cumbia Del Sol - The Blazers
2. El Talisman - Rosana
3. Obsession Confession (Instumental) - Slash And Jed Leiber

Empire Records soundtrack.
Anyone who has a soft spot for mid 90's alt rock would love this one. I do, yeah, that's right.

Granted it's a musical, but Hedwig and the Angry Inch? Great album. The Basketball Diaries - had The Cult, PJ Harvey, The Posies etc. Danny the Dog/Unleashed was kind of cool just to at least hear some new Massica Attack songs. And Purple Rain was kinda awesome back in the day. Backbeat was cool to hear Greg Dulli and friends tackle Beatles covers. Strange Days was kinda interesting, if only to hear Juliette Lewis sing a song PJ Harvey wrote.

Most of my faves have already been mentioned (Virgin Suicides, Squid and the Whale, Repo Man, Garden State) - but there are a couple other really good ones not mentioned.
Betty Blue (Gabriel Yared)and Blade Runner (Vangelis) both have great scores. And the Run Lola Run soundtrack will put some giddyup in your gallop.

Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels worked pretty well for me:
Hundred Mile High City - Ocean Colour Scene
The Boss - James Brown
Truly, Madly, Deeply - Skanga
Police and Thieves - Junior Murvin
18 with a Bullet - Lewis Taylor & Carleen Anderson
Spooky - Dusty Springfield
Man Machine - Robbie Williams
Walk This Land - E Z Roller
I Wanna Be Your Dog - The Stooges
Liar Liar - Castaways
Why Did You Do It - Stretch
Oh Girl - Evil Superstars
Zorba the Greek - John Murphy & David Hughes
The Payback - James Brown
Fool's Gold - The Stone Roses
18 with a Bullet - Pete Wingfield
A double dose of James Brown ("I don't know karate, but I know ca-ray-zee"), one of Robbie Williams' best songs, classics by Dusty, Junior Murvin, Stone Roses and The Stooges, and pretty good incidentals from Murphy and Hughes.
And also some of the quotes are absolute 24-carat; "It's a deal, it's a steal, it's sale of the fucking century. In fact, fuck it Nick, I think I'll keep it."

I agree with '24 hour party people'. Great soundtrack and movie if you are into the Madchester sound of the late 80's to early 90's. Another soundtrack I don't see here is from the Mike Myers movie 'So I Married an Axe Murderer...'
1. There She Goes - THE BOO RADLEYS
2. Brother - Toad The Wet Sprocket
3. The Break - Soul Asylum List
4. Starve To Death - Chris Whitley
5. Rush (New York City Club Version) - Big Audio Dynamite II
6. This Poem Sucks - Mike Myers

9. Two Princes - Spin Doctors
10. My Insatiable One - Suede
11. Maybe Baby - Sun-60
12. There She Goes - The La's
Yes both my choices are from the early 90's but they remind me of college and lots o' beersesss,

blowin' the dust off this! Great listings here too many to mention - good stuffies indeed. IMHO "To Live and Die in LA" by Wang Chung - a little dated BUT for those into the mid80s sound of the DX7 and synth the "second side" instrumental is marvelous.

PITTSBURGH, April 17, 2008 /Direct Newswire/ -- According to psychic medium
Jacqueline Murray, rock legends Jim Morrison of "The Doors" and Michael
Hutchence of "INXS" have given her riveting accounts of their controversial
deaths and the many myths that surrounded their lives as only they can tell
them.
Murray brings to life the channeled accounts of the lives and deaths of
Jim Morrison and Michael Hutchence with some help from world-renowned
psychic Christopher Reburn, Murray's spiritual teacher, who has confirmed
that these rock legends gave their words to her, based on her own clarity
and pure intent to give their true stories without adding her own bias or
opinions.
This book will take you on a journey that will make you believe Jim
Morrison and Michael Hutchence are standing next to you -- having a
conversation.
"I'm so proud of Jacqueline, and I proudly put my name on this book
project and encourage anyone with an open mind and an open heart to grab a
copy of this wonderful book, which will finally put so many rumors to rest
so that these two treasured people -- Jim Morrison and Michael Hutchence --
may finally spiritually evolve. Even if you are not a fan or familiar with
these two men, once you start reading this book, you'll soon find out that
you won't be able to put it down," stated Reburn.
Featured in the book:
Internationally known psychic Kathleen Tucci
(http://www.kathleentucci.com) claims to recount Jim Morrison's final hours
on earth and reveal the whereabouts of Pamela Courson while Jim lay dying.
Famous radio psychic and spiritual teacher Francine Milano
(http://www.FrancineMilano.com) claims to channel Pamela Courson, who
reveals her side of the story to Jim's death and what her life with Jim
Morrison was really like.
Famous L.A. psychics Linda Salvin and Judy Hevenly have verified the
channeling in this book (http://www.LindaSalvin.com and
http://www.Judyhevenly.com).
International psychic-medium Marjorie Augustine
(http://www.moonstonemediums.com) reveals the darker side of Jim Morrison.
Marjorie claims that in his channeling to her, Jim bares his soul to reveal
some of his behaviors that are both shocking and regretful.
According to Murray, Michael Hutchence reveals the facts surrounding
what really happened in Room 524 at the Ritz Carlton, in Double Bay,
Australia on November 22nd, 1997, when a young maid found the dead body of
the beloved, charismatic superstar and the controversy began. Murray claims
he details how he really died and why there was no note left behind and
provides the answers to why he was hoodwinked by those closest to him that
led to his missing millions.
Murray also claims that Michael gives his jaw-dropping thoughts on his
so-called brothers in "INXS" and the autobiography they wrote after his
death and explains his disdain for the reality show "Rock Star" and his
belief detailing why "INXS" should not have sought a replacement for him
after his death. His haunting poetry and lyrics are all throughout this
amazing account.
