My Name Is Erl

Stereogum hearts Erlend Oye, whether he's in Simøn & Garfunkel mode with Kings Of Convenience or getting his DJ kicks on the dancefloor. And he's yet another artist who has covered "There Is A Light..."

Mr. Oye's new project is The Whitest Boy Alive, a laid back electropop group that's actually not electro after all -- since its inception, Oye replaced the programmed beats with instruments. Three tunes (and one bit of spoken-word nonsense) are streaming at MySpace. The sing-songy "Above You" is fun and funky, but I'm really into "Burning," which rides a clean Cure-like guitar line ... though it actually wouldn't sound out of place on the last KoC album. And while you might've heard the dance remix of "Inflation," the album cut with its bouncy bass riff and angular guitars hints at a post-punk influence as well. Nothing earth-shattering here, but I think you guys will dig it.

They'll be at the Melt! Festival in Gräfenheinichen 7/14. Can't make it? Here's a song (not on MySpace) to tide you over until they hit the States, or you get your import copy of Dreams (out 6/21).

Erlend also lends his voice to a track on the new James Figurine CD Mistake Mistake Mistake Mistake. James' description:

This record was supposed to be an extra melodic, minimal techno record with some sparse vocals. Instead, my technopop tendencies got the best of me, the songs slowly filled up, and this is what I ended up with.
Good call James.

How good this is! The day before your entry I came to think of Erlend, because he is my favorit geek and it was so long since I've heard anything from him. I did some research and found another sideproject of his. My posting is here: http://indielaundry.blogspot.com/2006/05/new-untitled-erlend-oye-kompis-track.html

I haven't been up to anything recently, but so it goes. Such is life. What can I say? Pretty much not much exciting going on to speak of. I haven't gotten much done lately, but I don't care.

I realize this post is over a year old, but DAMN boy, when is Erlend going to come back to the US of A?!?! I'm dying to see one of his "singing and dancing DJ" sets...
