New Beirut - "A Sunday Smile"

Young master Condon's second full length sees release this October, although it's so good we already prematurely evaluated all over our keyboard, singling out first single "A Sunday Smile" for its "elegantly stringed carnival pump and lilt." Truly a tune built for woozy, boozy nights with drinking friends or on the Bowery stage with, well, more indie-famous friends. For your long weekend:

Beirut - "A Sunday Smile" (MP3)

The MP3 comes courtesy of Beirut's brand spankin' new site, which got itself a facelift in time for increased Flying Club Cup traffic including a nifty li'l media player, a forum, and some artwork reminiscent of the album-inspiring cover photo. So head over, poke around, start a thread discussing how cute Zach is, etc.

The Flying Club Cup is out 10/9 on Ba Da Bing!.

God, this band gives me such a headache! When I saw them at their last show at Bowery, I had to leave early b/c the brass was blaring. The might as well have been blowing into paper New Year's party horns. And Zach reminds me of a 4-year old who jumps off the couch when his folks have company to "sing opera."

Its a great song, i just think its about a minute too long. lots of repetition. but its a nice mix of carousels off of Lon gisland and Scenic World.

Quit Your Day Job: Ungdomskulen

The Bergen trio Ungdomskulen play proggy post punk, mixing chops and hooks with a sense of humor. But they don't sound like Primus. When I was in Norway a couple years ago, "Ungdomskulen" seemed to be on everybody's lips (or...

Premature Evaluation: Beck - Modern Guilt

It's been some time since we learned Modern Guilt, Beck Hansen's eighth album, would be some sort of psych rock minimalist '60s trip with Danger Mouse. Since then, we've gotten a look at the old-school jazz/Blue Note-style cover art and...
