New Black Moth Super Rainbow - "Born On A Day The Sun Didn't Rise"

thubmnail icon: New Black Moth Super Rainbow - "Born On A Day The Sun Didn't Rise"

Pennsylvania psychedelics Black Moth Super Rainbow, now expanded to a sextet, are following up 2007 breakthrough Dandelion Gum with their forthcoming fourth album Eating Us. The fixation on mouths and mastication (see, also, Tobacco) is fitting for a band composing such sweet, poppy, immediately consumable sound trips: See Eating's lead track "Born On A Day The Didn't Rise," which pairs that familiar vocoder spillage with hazy lush, stardusted instrumentation, and bouncy '60s drum beats. It's easy to make a Flaming Lips comparison or two; the fact that Dave Fridmann handled production makes it easier.

Heard the whole album a few times.
Not as brightly dark as Gum...
The new production hurts their vibe...
And they seem to be in a rut as far as the songs go...
It's all nice...and stuff...
But doesn't really go anyhwere new....

They continued to evolve up until Dandelion Gum, but aside from the production there's no real progression from that record.

This band is awesome, but this record is a little underwhelming.

i have no reason to believe that Dave Fridmann couldn't improve every band on the planet.

I thought the added production elements ADDED to their sound. Some backing strings never hurt anyone. The album is good guys, that's me keepin it real.

Have heard the whole album several times over and I think it's stunning - their best yet.
