New Bow Wow Wow - "I Want Candy" (Kevin Shields Remix)

We're big fans of Sofia Coppola's consistent coaxing of soundtrack contributions from Kevin Shields, and ever since the release of the Marie Antoinette soundtracklisting, this has been the only song that's mattered.

Bow Wow Wow – "I Want Candy" (Kevin Shields Remix) (MP3)

Bow Wow Wow's cover of the Strangeloves classic retains its inner Diddley through the first two verse-chorus cycles, but Kevin lays in with his typical tricks around 1:55. Sure, Shields takes greater liberties with his remix of BWW's "Fools Rush In," but this tastefully-tweaked pop confection is the best gift you could give your iPod to start the week.

Enjoy.

So that's all buttons pushed: weak, cynical and pointless. Another K.Shields remix for cash.

Next Week: Alt-legend Merzbow drops a pulverising noisy bit on top of The Shirelles' 31 Flavours, at the urgent behest of an anonymous lady millionaire trying to break into the film industry.

So... for the last :30 seconds he hit the riff with a little whammy bar - echo box effect. And that constitutes a genius remix...? Everyone (the listener, BowWowWow, the Strangeloves, Kevin himself) deserves better.

very...eh.

this really did nothing for me. the rest of the soundtrack looks good, though.

Great song, but I fail to see how it is a "remix". Virtually identical to what I remember back in the 80s.

Not amazing but still interesting to hear. Guess he can get away with it-that MBV goodwill goes a looong way!

I remember when I was little I wanted Anabella.

I'll stick with the original.

dsven, it's definantly a different mix from the original version, which makes it a REMIX. Can't you hear Kevins reverb goodness? You don't have to completely rehash a song to make it a remix ... there are remixes out there that are more of a reinterpretation than they are a remix.

On my RSS feed, I accidentally read Bow Wow - I Want Candy. As in (lil) Bow Wow. This is good but decidedly less interesting than I accidentally anticipated.

Never mind those bollocks, Scott - I think it's an awesome remix of an awesome song - and I thank you for posting it. It is, Scott, isn't it? Since you stopped posting your names, I'm a little creeped out. . . it's like Scott and Amrit don't exist anymore. It's just one entity, "Stereogum".

To dead_red_eyes, my point is that on first listen, I was kind of like "Huh? Is that it?" I haven't listened to that and the original back-to-back yet, but usually when I hear a remix, I know it right away.

Not to take away from the greatness of the (original) song, but given that Mr. Sheilds likely was paid more than I'll likely make in a year to add some "reverby goodness" makes me mildly annoyed.

Anyone interested should hunt down the June/July issue of the Believer (with Juana Molina on the cover) and read the mind-blowing article/chart/schema on the history of this song. For interested, did you know that it was written by Corey Feldman's father?

No, you didn't.

how much did kevin shields get paid to add reverb to an old 80s song that wasn't anything more than one of malcolm mcclaren's novelties in the first place? what a fucking farce. anybody with a computer could've done this themselves.
like every other indie kid, i loved loveless, but shields is a total wastoid, has done nothing relevant in a decade and a half, and it seems like he has no plans to ever do anything other than collect checks for doing half-assed remixes and throw-away demos (re: "city girl")

well, i suspect the reason they've become "stereogum" is that all the posts demonstrating bad musical taste have been amrit's.

This is the same song with a mild bit of studio twiddling at the end. I love Kevin Shields but to call this a remix is ridiculous.

Perhaps nobody at SG wants to take responsibility for the curious Scissor Sisters obsession...

It's worth remembering, of course, that it's for a soundtrack - he would have been directed (unlike with MBV Arkestra, for instance, or his work with The Pastels) Having said that, I think it's a complete non-event; yet another disappointment..

The person who said Shields has done nothing relevant in a decade-and-a-half is incorrect, however. As mentioned, there is MBV Arkestra - but much more than this, there are things like his track '2' for the LaLaLa Human Steps ballet (listen to Fennesz's 'Circassian' and realise that Shields was there ten years before), and also his work LAST YEAR on The Coral Sea (emphasis added as his contributions to the performances this year were useless). Those two alone are enough for me to keep faith in him.

Gonna have to agree with MO. Nothing super-special here. Would this be a re-edit ? Cause the track isn't really 'remixed'

ok, bonbon, i'll give you mbv arkestra, and even the other tracks on xtrmntr that shields contributed to...maybe even his "autumn sweater remix"...but approx 20 minutes of "quality" music in 15 years? i wouldn't care if he wasn't getting away with trading on his name on shameful remixes for cash. it's a scam. it also makes me believe that loveless was a fluke, a moment of the right technology coming into the hands of the right band.

Yeah bonbon, those Coral Sea shows this year we're even as good as the one last year ... the last 5 minutes of that show was seriously awesome. Yeah the remix isn't completely amazing, but I'm sure that he did a fair amount of tweaking and such ... maybe he just didn't want to fuck with a good thing ... idk.
