New Choir Of Young Believers - "Next Summer"

thubmnail icon: New Choir Of Young Believers - "Next Summer"

Danish songwriter Jannis Joya Makrigiannis trumpets his wares under the moniker Choir Of Young Believers, figuring as its primary visionary but, as is clear after a spin through this pair of tracks, not its only member. In concert the outfit can stretch from two to eight players; on the surging orchestral pop of "Next Summer," he's pushing the maximum end of that range. The single comes from his debut LP This Is For The White In Your Eyes, putting soaring strings and a voice to match in service of gushing lyrics about drama and heartbreak and ruined summers. Jannis's tenor recalls the sweetly worn modality of an Andrew Bird, or at the close of "Next Summer," the pharyngial tone of a resigned Robin Pecknold (the press materials go with Neil Young, so maybe you'll hear that), but the music underneath billows with the bygone, widescreen orchestral pomp of the late '60s. Nothing's being held back. It's a good intro to his Choir, rounded out here with the sunnier backbeat pop of "Action/Reaction."

This was one of my favorite albums from last year, so I'm glad it coming out here on Ghostly. Maybe they'll tour, and maybe I'll get to see it.
