New Clientele - "I Wonder Who We Are"
![]()
"I Wonder Who We Are" is the fakeout opening track on the Clientele's forthcoming fourth album Bonfires On The Heath. "Fake out" because just when you think they've gone upbeat cheery, we get the smeary, languorous late-October title track, the beautifully harmonized scarecrow and bat-lined "Harvest Time," a couple songs with "night" in the title, etc. In other words, don't let what you're about to hear give you the wrong impression: Outside the psych-rock nugget "Sketch" and the funky "Share the Night," the London band's God Save The Clientele followup is just as slow-release dusky as past material. If not more so. Of course, even sunnier tracks are subtly detailed and stitched with shadows. Get happy, downcast romantics.

That song is absolutely perfect. And wow, that album cover is STUNNING. Now can people please start appreciating this band in mass amounts like they have deserved for so long?

Great track. The album cover is inspired by the work of Arcimboldo. It may be one of his paints, dunno. Check it out : http://minurl.fr/q7n

Color me excited.

These guys are one of the most consistently underrated bands around. I have seen them three times and two of those times there were only about 100 people watching them...and half of the crowd was yapping the whole time!
Really, really excited for this album (and the subsequent US tour)!

These guys are the epitome of lame indie rock. My ex-girlfriend dragged me out to see them at The Knitting Factory a few years ago. I thought they were awful. Then I listened to all their music thinking maybe they had an off night. Confirmed. Weak band, especially musically. The guitar palyer was the worst. I met a few guys in the bathroom who were laughing at how bad they were. To each their own I guess.
Score = -15
To express an opinion is one thing - attacking ones skill is another. I've been a musician for over ten years. I've seen this band on several occasions and can confidently confirm that they are not lacking in any way musically.
This song is fantastic and I'm excited to hear the rest of the album. October is a long wait.

I really really liked "Strange Geometry" when it came out, enough so that I zealously gobbled up their previous stuff even though it didn't resonant with me nearly as much. I saw them at the Black Cat in DC the day "God Save the Clientele" and the show was terribly boring. I wouldn't say they were incompetent, as everybody was playing their respective instruments without any trouble, but even when the singer/guitarist played snuck in a snippet of Marquee Moon or a quote or two from the Byrds' Eight Miles High, it came off as completely "eh." It was so lackluster that I didn't give "God Save..." much of a chance afterward, which is pretty childish in hindsight, but I had never had my opinion of a band so dramatically changed by a show. I do like this track, though.

Ha. I've been hacking away at the electric guitar for about 20 years now, and the one time I have seen the Clientele, I was blown away by Alasdair's playing. And that was in a shitty venue with horrible sound, too!
Score = 2
totally! he's one of the best guitarists i've ever seen live. incredible.

What do they think, they're the Jazz Butcher Conspiracy? Who does he think he is, Max Eider? No way. No freakin' way. Drinkin' outta cups...bein' a bitch...
