New Counting Crows - "When I Dream Of Michelangelo" & "1492"

What is it with Adam Duritz and his preoccupation with great painters, eh? Maybe it's because his mug itself made for great art? 15 years ago he was all "If I knew Picasso..." and buying gray guitars to play, and then a little later on Recovering The Satellites' "Angels Of The Silences" it was "I dream of Michelangelo when I'm lying in my bed," and here he's ... still dreaming of Michaelangelo, still lying in his bed. Dude's been asleep for like a decade. (Take that as you will.)

Counting Crows - Saturday Nights, Sunday Mornings

Counting Crows - "When I Dream Of Michelangelo" (MP3)

That acoustic 'n' piano picker's definitely from the Sunday Nights part of the Counting Crows' forthcoming Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings LP, split to showcase their rock side (six songs) and their hungover side (eight songs). Here's a rocker, sorta:

Counting Crows - "1492" (MP3)

We already talked our history with the band's records (love for August and the one thing after) when we posted "Cowboys," which remains the best thing they'd done since Recovering. Not hearing much more, here, to get us to come around (certainly not "Come Around"), but we're fine to settle for the flicker of life coming from "Cowboys." (Shh ... you can still download it here)

Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings is out 3/25 on Geffen/Interscope.

1492 was originally recorded (with a bit softer edge, I believe) for Hard Candy, but was dropped.

Thanks for the tracks.

I used to love the Counting Crows in the 90s but something happened (same thing with Sarah McLachlan) where I just kind of...outgrew them and their sound.

(To the tune of "He's Got The Whole World In His Hands") He's got a pine-apple for a head / He's got a pine-apple for a head.....

Jesus Christ Almighty, that photo is almost as scary as the video for "Accidentally In Love". Terrible band, duff tunes, and, if memory serves correctly, a lead singer with a predilection for really young ladies as per an interview with Q (when Q was still great) around '95 or so.

At this point, I have no other option to get up from my desk, wander around the office for a bit and attempt to work out how there's still a demand for a band like Counting Crows. They're about as exciting as the fucking Dave Matthews Band. Boring "college rock". Over here, it's just called "shite".

You indie fans are too much! Get off your high horse already. I like indie rock as much as any typical Stereogum reader but can still appreciate a good Counting Crows tune when one comes along. Plus, I'd rather read ten articles about Counting Crows than even one headline about "American Idol". Now THAT'S shite.

If I am not mistaken this photo is from the Desert Life Sessions...

1492, by the way is easy on the ears...
When I Dream of Michaelangelo sounds cool, like it fell off August and Everything After...

Counting Crows sound inspired, best sounds they have released since 1999...

I much prefer the slow song. 1492 was just grating.

@rocknrollchad

true enough, that was an old photo. updated with new press shot, just so the ongoing discussion of the shape of duritz's noggin has integrity and is based on the most recently available imagery. you may proceed.

Hate all you like, they've had a career that has spanned over a decade with five records, nevermind all the live stuff they've released as well, they essentially get paid ridiculous amounts of money to play their music for a living.
Get out of your parent's basement and stop eating paint chips.

Save time and write your opinions without listening to the music. Then you can move on to really productive activities...

I like the band, and love August, but I draw the line at leather jackets with fringes. It's too much to bear.

So why do people care about how a musician looks or acts offstage instead of the music? Should we hate Radiohead cause their singer looks like the son of Slough from Goonies? NO. There are 6 other members in the band and all I hear is good music and lyrics that take some thinking. And if you graduated high school and went to college, you would understand. Oh and with all the artist leaving major labels to put out their own music online, INDIE ROCK IS DEAD.

Wow. All these "counting crows suck" comments are just so deep and mature. If you actually listen to the music and lyrics, you can begin to understand what an incredible songwriter Adam Duritz is. Don't compare them to DMB.. they are COMPLETELY different. 1492 is one of the most raw, emotional, and original songs you will ever hear. When I Dream.. is a bit recycled, but it's decent. The new album will be amazing, and i'm sure the record sales will back me on that statement.

also: new single Feb 4 - "You Can't Count On Me." Just something for my fellow CC fans here and I to look forward to.

Counting Crows Best Album will Always be August & Everthing After. I didn't really care as much for Recovering the Satalites. Now I just collect my favorite songs off of I-Tunes. That sound like they could be continued from A&EA. They still make great music. But that doesan't mean I have to love every song they write.

I have been a fan of Counting Crows since their first Album. I am Scottish & live In Abu Dhabi, U.A.E. and will be travelling all the way to Glasgow, U.K. to see this great band in December. To the critic, thankfully we all don't like the same music, but my life is richer having listened to their great music & lyrics. I am so looking forward to this concert as I have never seen them live.
