New Dan Auerbach (Black Keys) - "I Want Some More" (Stereogum Premiere)

thubmnail icon: New Dan Auerbach (Black Keys) - "I Want Some More" (Stereogum Premiere)

Black Keys vocalist/guitarist Dan Auerbach shows up sans Patrick Carney for his solo debut Keep It Hid. It's wasn't too long ago that the duo themselves released their fifth album, Attack & Release Release; in fact, Auerbach wrote a bunch of these new songs while on the road in support of it. Auerbach produced the album by himself in his Akron Analog studio mentioning he "wanted a live, organic sound. Nothing was too plotted or planned, just a lot of spontaneity." He got what he wanted because he performs most of it (drums, guitar, percussion, and keyboards) minus the occasional guest like his uncle James (not Robert) Quine, who adds vocal harmonies and electric guitar on "Street Walkin," Jessica Lea Mayfield (vocals on "When the Night Comes") and Bob Cesare (drums on "Whispered Words"). DA says the collection's "a mixture of things I like to listen to, psychedelia, soul music, country harmonies." Lead track "I Want Some More"'s a grimy, bluesy down-and-dirty love/lust song that should go over well with fans of the Black Keys.

You'll get to see him do it in person, if you so wish: He heads out on tour by his lonesome in February. One of the opening acts, Hacienda, will serve as his backing band.

Keep It Hid is out 2/10 via Nonesuch. The live dates:

02/28 - Washington, DC @ 9:30 Club
03/01 - Boston, MA @ Paradise Club

God, does this man ever rest? I think he's been touring non-stop since I first noticed The Black Keys when Rubber Factory came out, it's possible he's been touring long before that. I really like this track, but then again with that soulful voice of his he could sing Barney songs and I'd still dig it. Definitely looking forward to his solo album, I wonder how this will play out live. Either way, I bought tickets to see the Black Keys on February, so all's good.

Yeah, so far I don't understand this project. I mean, Dan is amazing and any new music by him is appreciated, but based on this song, it sounds like The Black Keys. Looking forward to hearing more though.

Just try not to think about it. Tom Petty's solo albums make even less sense since they usually have the Heartbreakers on them anyway. Just let the artist do what they do and you will reap the benefits.

It is extremely similar to The Black Keys, but being a 2 member band... remember that Dan is carrying 50% of that influence over. I really think there are differences though, keyboard, bass and guitar all at once, it's really something that can't be done with TBK.

Wow. I like the black keys......But I find it rather funny that the front man of a two member band prefers to do a solo project. Awesome.
