New Deerhunter - "Rainwater Cassette Exchange"

Generous to a fault Bradford Cox has a new EP and this time it's out on Kranky instead of Blogspot. Rainwater Cassette Exchange was recorded with Microcastle engineer Nicolas Vernhes in Brooklyn this past February and starting today they're giving away its vaguely tropical sounding title track.
Deerhunter - "Rainwater Cassette Exchange" (MP3)
Tracklist:
01 "Rainwater Cassette Exchange"
02 "Disappearing Ink"
03 "Famous Last Words"
04 "Game of Diamonds"
05 "Circulation"
Rainwater Cassette Exchange is out digitally 5/18 and as CD or vinyl (but not cassette, apparently) in your local Sam Goody 6/8.

I can't wait. Everything they put out is pure quality greatness.

Sounds like Bradford has been listening to MPP . . .
Score = -1
I don't really hear the Animal Collective influence - this sounds more like it's tapping into those reverby, melancholy 1960s ballads that songs like Twilight at Carbon Lake on their last album hinted at.
Score = 1
I agree. Whoever compared this to Animal Collective is being lazy. Sounds like Beach Boys or Girl Groups on benzos.
Score = 1
The comparison is not that lazy. I read that he mentioned AC's MPP as an influence.

The comparison to Animal Collective isn't lazy http://pitchfork.com/news/35001-5-10-15-20-bradford-cox/. Bradford said that is what he is listening to these days.

this is forgettable shit

I've been listening to this song on repeat for about an hour now. Too damn good. I love the little Carol Kaye-like surf bass on the verses.
The demo of 'Game of Diamonds' was great and 'Disappearing Ink' is already a monster in their live show, so I can't wait for studio versions of both of those tracks.
Score = 1
Kind of groping around,,,doesn't have the natural pop instincts to really get it all the way there...Animal Collective are doing it at a very high level right now...I don't think they're so easy to copy...I hope nobody takes Pitchfork TOO seriously...
Score = -3
this is the worst track on the EP!
