New Donny Hue & The Colors - "Mountain Piece"

Folkmote is Donny Hue's debut effort with the Colors, a band assembled to execute his take on psych-spilling chamber pop. After a few spins this week, we found "Mountain Piece" cruising to the top of our playcount (awesome listening for when you're next stuck sitting on a Jet Blue runway for an hour on your way out to Chicago), with lush, organ-infused folk by turns slow-building and soaring. Should find a happy home on your PMP, next to Okkervil River and E6 bands of yore.

mmm-mmm,nice discovery! I love the layered organ/piano sounds and the innocence seeping thru on the vocals. will have to catch them out west.

bad luck for the already existing (and in my opinion superior) australian band called "the colors", huh?

... it's bad luck for "the colors" for not being quite as witty or talented, it seems.

As we pass saturation point for press coverage of Montreal, Portland, Brooklyn and et cetera, it seems Lawrence, Kansas is poised for its coming turn in the music media trend piece carousel. At least from what we're hearing; this marks...

Quit Your Day Job: Ungdomskulen

The Bergen trio Ungdomskulen play proggy post punk, mixing chops and hooks with a sense of humor. But they don't sound like Primus. When I was in Norway a couple years ago, "Ungdomskulen" seemed to be on everybody's lips (or...

Premature Evaluation: Beck - Modern Guilt

It's been some time since we learned Modern Guilt, Beck Hansen's eighth album, would be some sort of psych rock minimalist '60s trip with Danger Mouse. Since then, we've gotten a look at the old-school jazz/Blue Note-style cover art and...
