New Dresden Dolls - "Sing"

We first had Dolls pegged as a novelty act (blame them costumes). In the years since, Amanda's live shows and the duo's canon of covers convinced me to throw expectations out the window. "Sing" (the last track on sophomore release Yes, Virginia, out 4/18), may begin and end with profanity, but is completely heartfelt, and -- get this -- evokes no images of Weimar Germany! "Life is no cabaret," goes the climactic Doll part. Ready for Dresden 2.0?

It would be funny if some YouTuber mashed this ballad to slow motion scenes from American Idol. Or not.

The Dresden Dolls - "Sing" (MP3 Link Expired)

Sing 'cause it's obvious /Sing for the astronauts / Sing
Sing for the President /Sing for the terrorists / Sing
Sing for the soccer team / Sing for the Janjaweed / Sing
Sing for the kid with the phone / Who refuses to sing / Just sing...
You motherfuckers: you sing something!

(FYI: the album title refers to the story of Virginia O'Hanlon.)

Keep an ear out for the new album, and in the meantime head to Radio Free Internet to download Dolls' live take on "Hallejulah" (Leonard Cohen, "Karma Police" (Radiohead), "War Pigs" (Black Sabbath), and "Two-Headed Boy" (Neutral Milk Hotel).

At this point I think I can make a whole mix of "Two-Headed Boy" covers.

Here's an admittedly blurry, but still cool pic Jim shot of Brian at Thursday's Dolls gig.

Great song - Amanda's more subtle voice is lovely.

I heard this song - without knowing who it was - on the local alt.rock station. I had to listen all the way to the end to find out who sang it so that I could protect myself from ever having to hear it again. I'd rather listen to Nickelback.

Its ok, admittedly not as good as most of their other stuff, but still better than most of the shit you hear.

Sing really sounds nothing like their others stuff. You're not giving them a chance if you judge them by that song. That said, it's their fault for recording the stupid thing. And touring with P@tD.

I think this song is amazing.
In fact, I'd consider it one of their best.
It's heartfelt and considerably more classy than some of their other stuff.
So fuck you all.

Really I love there songs. All of them. even the ones that I dont like I like. So that being said I love this one 2. Its almost for the first time the song is about something that is happing. They dont have to sing there funny stupid shit all the time, just so you dumb asses can think its funny and or self lothing. They have the right to be more then that.

Quite, frankly I agree with Katherine. This song is amazing. It's a bit more obvious than most of their other songs, that are catchy but the meaning hidden deep within the metaphors. This song just straight out says it. The people who can't see the amazing talent of The Dresden Dolls really need to quit fucking listening to crappy music. Get a reality check. The Dresden Dolls sounds better than ALOT of shit that gets so much publicity, it's not even funny. Some people I guess, just can't see good music. Well, good day.
