New Electric Six - "Dance Pattern” (Stereogum Premiere)
Last time we ran into Electric Six, ironical vocalist Dick Valentine was wearing some sort of flashing codpiece, while an old woman (with flashing breast parts) mouthed Jack White's backing vocals. Yeah, they've done a lot since then -- like drug buying, dance commanding, gay-bar hanging -- but we'd sorta forgotten until a bit on Fluxbog reminded us of how much fun the Detroit six-piece can be. Also -- bonus points! -- the band's fourth album has a title we can abide by: I Shall Exterminate Everything Around Me That Restricts Me From Being The Master. Hear that, Mom?

Electric Six - "Dance Pattern" (MP3)
We kid. The name comes from a 1921 drawing by the German artist George Grosz referencing capitalism in all sorts of excess. The band chose it for good reason. They write:
The album is excessive in its exploration of excess. Every song in one way or another is the result of excessive access to excess. The jazzy cabaret-ish album opener “It’s Showtime! “ explores what happens to a band when it plays in excess of 250 shows a year in front of…..people. Here’s a hint: excessive resent and anger at…...people. It is followed by the piano-raga grooviness of “Down at McDonnellzzzzz” a real time documentation of the erosion of American youth culture at the hands of excess trans fats and supersized shareholder profits at the expense of excessive burgers. So where does "Dance Pattern"'s neurotic new-wave disco-dancing fit into the excess? Well, if you've seen us dance, you'll understand. Love it when Valentine asks, "Was my vox too sexy? / Was my vox too strong?" (We hear ya, dude, though at first we thought you said "box.") It's like a Scissor Sisters Blues Explosion.
I Shall Exterminate Everything Around Me That Restricts Me From Being The Master is out 10/9 on Metropolis.

Geez, they're still around!?
Yeah! This song is pretty energic and sounds excellent to the floors. I thought I'd never hear from Electric Six anymore.

Ah, Electric Six. Brings back memories. My friend and I used to sing 'Gay Bar' to each other. I'm glad they've got a new song, I didn't think I'd see anything new from them anymore. Definitely gonna pick up that new CD.

They never really went away. Their last album "Switzerland" is probably the best of the 3 already out there, new one sounds great too. They are just plain fun and everyone likes fun!

i'm in detroit so it's kinda hard not to hear about electric six, though they seemed to have faded out of the international conscience.
but really, go see em' live, it's a party.

E6 just played live over the summer - I caught the Rocks Off cruise show and lived to tell about it:

Yeah, Electric Six never actually went away... in fact, they've only gotten better in the time since their debut. This song is actually the first single from their FOURTH album, and I think the last two albums were pretty great. They're actually--somewhat surprisingly--turning out to be a band with staying power, even if they don't get the kind of promotion they got in '03.

I really like this song. I did a write up about it on my own blog and posted "Down At The McDonnellz"

Can anyone take these guys seriously anymore? What a bunch of faggots.

Even if they never top "Fire," it's always good to hear from the Six - a band that's not afraid to actually have some fun. The new album's pretty decent - I'm all for "Down at McDonnelzz," "Dance Pattern," and "Randy's Hot Tonight."

Ron is a tasteless prick and deserves to be eaten by a pack of blistered dogs.
E6 is a high concept act, not a novelty. They are more Devo than Weird Al, so stop with the 'i can't take them seriously' bullshit. of course they're not meant to be taken seriously, but that's beside the point ya ignoramus.
Do you take Frank Zappa seriously? Of course not. Does that make him any less great a musician? No.
Critics who call E6 a joke too far are pretty unintellegent and unperceptive. Their act is a pretty accurate reflection on the triviality and flashiness of modern living. Their absurdist pop culture commentary is also one of the most potent nowadays.
