New Free Energy - "Free Energy"

thubmnail icon: New Free Energy - "Free Energy"

From the demise of Minneapolis's Hockey Night comes Free Energy. Guitarist Scott Wells and singer Paul Sprangers are the main Hockey Night dudes to spearhead this new project, a throwback classic rocking quintet calling Philly home and earning constant comparisons to Thin Lizzy, Cheap Trick, and their bygone ilk. For a band more interested in layering their crunching '70s FM hooks with hammer ons and pull offs and aww shit guitar lines, it's curious they've found a home in the dance den of DFA Records, but then that label's honcho is a celebrated curious listener. The band released one MP3 ("Dream City") in May to test the waters and next week puts out its debut 7" featuring the eponymous "Free Energy." We've got both of 'em here for you. Both produced by James Murphy, both not the sort of thing usually produced by James Murphy. Except for the cowbell.

The band's debut 7" is out 7/21 via DFA. Also, they give great tips on wood chopping. (Best suggestion: "not to get stabbed.")

These are great. I didn't even know that Hockey Night broke up, but I think these songs are an improvement on what they had.
