New Guns N' Roses - Chinese Democracy
Earlier this week, Page Six ran a story about Axl Rose bartering entrance to the Stereo nightclub after closing (at 5:30 AM) so he could continue his 44th birthday bash. His offer? A listening party for the COMPLETED Chinese Democracy which he'd been working on for the last nine years.
Difficult to get excited about that, since Axl once claimed the album would be out in 1998 (and every year since then) but tracks are leaking. So this is the real deal. All we needed was just a little patience [cue whistling].
After trying a handful of producers over the last decade (including Roy Thomas Baker, Bob Ezrin, Sean Beavan, and our favorite village vegan Moby) ultimately the album will be Axl-produced.
As far as we understand, this is the current band:
Buckethead was of course the most interesting thing to happen to Project Democracy in years, but he quit in early '04. [Sidenote: a man with a KFC bucket on his head will be the most interesting thing to happen to most projects; try it at the office sometime.]

The songs sound a lot better than I expected, especially since Chinese Democracy has basically been a joke for years. I actually am sort of looking forward to the album and will be buying it. Still mad about it being under the GnR name, though. They really should be called Axl Rose Band.

That recording of "The Blues" is actually the soundboard recording from the Pittsburgh show back in '02. Sounds like it's been cleaned up with a lot of the live sounds filtered out. Nonetheless, a damn good song.

I saw GNR in Vegas in 2001-2002 New Year's Eve show and they were awesome. The myth of this whole album gives it expectations no band could handle. I wish Axl was less like Howard Hughes and would just have put this out 10 years ago. There's no way you could go in and work everyday on an album for this long. I'm wondering how much work they put in a week on this. Hopefully it will see the light of day. Madagascar is great. Chinese Democracy is great. Not so sure about TWAT. Axl does look like hell. Guess 15 years in hiding will do that to ya.

TWAT is one of the best songs I've heard in years. And the amazing thing about this is that regardless of the line up, the sound is pure Guns N Roses. That is a pretty big accomplishement considering that the original band was so unique within itself, and given the contributions of Slash and Izzy. I saw the House of Blues show in 2001 and is mindblowing, by far the most rewarding concert experience I have ever had. I think in the end, the quality of Chinese Democracy will be hard to deny, no matter what pre determined judgements people bring to the table because of Axl's behavior or personality.

I am actually excited about new GNR material. They're the band I cut my teeth on back in the day and, cheesy as it souns, still have a special place in my heart. I have to admit I'm not displeased with some of the new stuff.
Also, does anyone have a studio version of Madagascar?

Can't speak for others, but I'm someone who's legitimately excited about finally hearing the album. Was a huge metal fan back in the day whose tastes have shifted in the intervening 15 years, but I still have a weak spot in my heart for GNR. Indie snob or not, there's no denying that Appetite for Destruction is a great, great rock album. (Well, I'm sure someone might deny it, but they'd be wrong.)
Of the four songs I've heard leaks of, I'd rate them as follows:
(1) Better -- the 1.5 minute clip makes this song sound like the second coming of GNR. An awesome tune. Kicks ass. Hope the full song holds up.
(2) IRS -- cool tune, if a tad repetitive. I'm hoping this isn't the final version floating around though -- it needs a couple of guitar overdubs to fill it out. Axl sounds great on it though.
(3) The Blues -- sounds like it could have been on Illusions. That's good in one way, but bad in the sense that it just doesn't seem to add anything new. That said, it's not a bad tune at all.
(4) T.W.A.T. -- pretty boring. Hoping it grows on me.
Oh, and I saw them do Madagascar at MSG a couple years ago, and I remember liking it a lot.

I did read about the whole thing with Chinese Democracy in a local paper recently, and I was, like the writers, skeptical about it coming out this year. I'll tell you one thing: there are a lot of musicians and engineers around L.A. who have made a fortune off this thing. They were paying the Pro Tools guy like twenty five G's a month. The guys in the band got six-figure salaries for years on end and mostly just hung out playing PlayStation and shooting hoops. They rented a piece of gear for two years and barely used it, and the rental ended up costing over $100,000.
The production costs for the record overall are around $15 million.

How very sort of anticlimactic. Even though I really don't care for Guns 'N Roses (There Was A Time-- I guess he hasn't lost the touch) I am slightly curious to see what happens with the album. After all, it is the most famous still-unreleased album in rock and roll I would say. It'll probably go gold and probably do about as well as Velvet Revolver did- have a couple big singles and then sort of drift off and Axl can start picking fights with Vince Neil on VH1. I listened to 'The Blues' and I was surprised that it did sound like classic G'n'R (I don't know if this is a good thing). I think if the record does come out, it is going to have one killer ballad, one cool rock song with killer riff and that will be about it - not good for a double record or has that changed now?

what i find strange though is this recordings show the same quality voice gnr had back in the days. and i remember seeing the mtv vmas 02, where they showed up and played some songs, and axl's voice seemed exhausted, plus, he couldn't make the same running around, now he got tired and had difficulty singing, because of his overweight.
on the other hand. try, just, try to be in his position. he had the best f°ing band in the world circa 1987-1994. the guy ended up alone. he could've quit music, and live a comfortable life, but no, this comes to show how much he loves music, the guy reconstructed a band which actually captures the old sound of the band, single-handed. yes, he's gotten fat and has awful dreadlocks, but hey, it's the music that concerns us (though he could go to the gym).
i admire this guy for reviving from the ashes. he might be an obnoxious as a person you could say. but not everyone has the courage to revive a band and actually coming up with good material. cheers, axl.

Overall, disappointing. I saw GNR in Cleveland in 02 and they put on an excellent show, I think they played "the Blues" from what I remember. It's really disappointing to know that Axl's eccentricities have ruined a really good band. It was looking really promising with Buckethead in the lineup, but Axl blew that, too. "Use your Illusion" showed what a talented songwriter Axl was, I am afraid "Chinese Democracy" will just make him look stupid.

To whomever said this will go gold...Guns N Roses are still insanely huge; how many units did that Greatest Hits album push? And that was a compilation of what, three albums and a couple of b-sides? If the album is bad, it will still push a few million, probably a good chunk of that will be in the first week. If it's good, it'll probably sell a helluva lot more. But to say it will just go gold is insane. Weezer's Green Album went platinum and they weren't a fraction as popular as GNR even during the Blue Album days; not to mention they had only been gone for 3 or 4 years. Axl's been gone for almost a decade and a half. This thing will be pretty massive, how massive however, is up for debate.

"I.R.S." is pretty good. "The Blues", eh, not so much, sounds like a demo with a lot of double-tracked vocals. And, to answer the first question, yeah, I'm anticipating the album. How could you not be? I mean, I'm the farthest thing from an indie snob, I like lots of different music, but even if you are an indie snob, you've got to have just the tiniest bit of morbid curiosity to know what lies at the end of this decade-long saga. I just hope that the anticipation gets sated before 2012 (which is the year each MP3 file says when I played them on my iTunes...ha!)

If these sound dated, its because they are.
"The Blues" is nothing more than two soundboard quality live tracks from the 2002 tour dubbed over top of each other. Completely fan made, and only a so-so job at that. So don't be fooled...you get the gist of the song, but the "album" version will be stellar.
"IRS" is a rough demo or very early studio mix. Again, you get the gist of the song...and its pretty decent. But you can certainly expect the $15M worth of studio time these tracks have seen to really shine on the album.
"Better", whether you've heard it or not, is the highlight of all the leaks. Listen to it! This will give you a feel for what the new GNR are going to be.
"There Was A Time" is growing on me. But I'm holding out more/less to see what the studio album is going to do to this song. I feel like a lot of important qualities about this song are lost in this early mix.

I got a good laugh out of this comment.
I was actually working a few years back with Sean Beavan when Tommy Stinson dropped by to say hello to Sean (we weren't working on GNR, by the way). Afterwards, I heard the story of how Axl got Tommy to join this GNR redux unit... Basically, Axl deposited a rather large amount of money in Mr. Stinson's bank account, THEN he asked the bass player to join the new GNR. Needless to say, the amount deposited was of an amount one would be foolish to say no to, and Tommy Stinson is no fool.
So. please, don't worry about 'poor' Tommy Stinson. He's hardly that at all.
On another note, people seem to be forgetting that Chinese Democracy was due out a few years back, but got pushed back MORE because of a truly horrid performance by Axl (out of breath, out of tune) on the MTV Awards (oh, please, somebody offer a link to a video of that performance). And the rest of the new GNR did a good job then, but you just looked at them and wondered how these bunch of strangers were to be even remotely considered to be Guns N Roses. Axl needs to hurry up and put it out... then, when it tanks and the next Velvet Revolver album tanks, the real GNR can get back together and work on their inevitable reunion album. It's just like George Burns said... Show business is a hideous bitch goddess.

I love when people say how the next Velvet Revolver album is going to tank, that's hilarious. The next Velvet album will sell well, and so will Chinese Democracy. Velvet will sell well because a lot of people bought the first one and will blindly buy the second one. GNR will sell well because people will be curious. So, no GNR reunion for the fanboys, sorry.

What's weird is that I never heard so many songs where only a portion was good but the rest of the track sucks. I almost sounds as if Axl really tried as hard as he could to write a good song, then a minute or two into it the song always just trails into some lame ass filler material just so he can get 3 or four minutes out of it. In some tracks the filler is more at the beginning and some tracks it just sounds like it's more at the end.
I'm hardpressed to say that I totally enjoyed a complete song. "The Blues" is the clear Cut Hit here. The rest of the tracks seem like pieced together cutting room material from the 80's. The only thing that will sell this CD is if they release a kick ass song first so that everyone thinks the rest of the CD is that good! Unfortunately there are going to be lots of dissapointed people once they hear the rest of this crap.

Wow. I can't even begin to tell the story of why I have and always will dislike Guns N' Roses. But trust me, it's pretty damn legitimate.
Anyways, I refuse to believe that whatever this new album sounds like; it will certainly not have been worth the wait. If it took me 10+ years to write an album, I figure it better either be the best damn CD ever, or it better be a catalyst for world peace. And neither of those are going to happen from this release. I don't care what the title is, or how many demos Axl's made, or if yor best friends mom has a cousin that once slept with Mr. Rose. None of that is relevant.
What is relevant, is that Axl's spent these past years laughing it up. He sees the hype, he might come up with a couple crappy riffs a day, and choke on his lover's phallus before he goes to bed. He's one of the biggest has-been's in the history of music, and even he realizes that. But he planted the seed in the media that stated he's going to make a new album oh-so-many years ago, and people are still shitting their brains out over it. Ok, I've listened over and over to all leaked tracks and previously played live versions and I can honestly say that they're definately worth listening to. After 3 or 4 listens, the various layers become evident and we can hear how professionally complex these recordings are and they're kick ass tunes. When we've all gotten over the fact that our original GNR heroes aren't with Axl anymore we might give these new musicians and Axl a bit of credit. Not everyone is gonna immediately like this but to deny yourself the pleasure of letting these tracks burn into your brain would be unfortunate. Had to respond to this above, even though you'll never see it. You are a moron. The Stooges were the shit, but to compare Iggy to Axl is just absurd. And kick Axl out of the band? Are you fucking gone? He is one of the best songwriters of all fucking time, and if you disagree you are stupid and wrong. When did people start thinking that Izzy was the balls of GNR. He was the fucking rythym guitarist! Axl writes almost all of the songs and lyrics and Izzy writes some. Its no secret, look it up. Well I've got here rather late and all the leaked tracks have been taken down, but personally, I don't think Chinese Democracy has a hope in hell.
Any album that has taken nine years will either be really great or painfully bad. And considering it has been scheduled for release so many times, there have been line-up changes galore, and Axl Rose is producing it himself, it's safe to say that the album will suck. Or at least won't be half as good as anything the real G'N'R produced.
If Axl Rose had made this into his own project after the end of it all, the album might work, because people's expectations would be different. They wouldn't know what was coming. However, since he didn't do that, everyone will compare it to Appetite For Destruction and then call it a piece of shit. (Which it probably will be)

man. thank all of you for the laughs. fuckin funny shit. especially comments out of nowhere like "THE NEW ALBUM IS GONNA SUCK COCK". that shit is funny. anyway. axl has PERSONALLY said march 07 and says he never personally gave a release date. i never heard any of the leaks and am glad i havent. like to wait and hear it as he intends it to be heard. saw them in NYC not long ago and I must say I was pretty blown away. had about 10th row center and dude was like a maniac. eyes all buggin' (in a good way). Beside me was the group of younguns...early 20s I guess. they were fuckin diggin' it. girls were all tonguing each other. wow. anyway. i love VR and GNR and STP. Sure I wont be let down. Gotta a feeling if this thing does well that we are going to be hearing Chinese Democracy II, III, and IV in rapid succession--since he pretty much already has enough material recorded. I wanna see AXL join VR. I think that would be cool and fuck it throw in the Audioslave guys too.

I got a bootleg a couple weeks ago of chinese democracy, its got 10 tracks: Better, I.R.S., T.W.A.T, catcher in the rye, oh my god, silk worms, the blues, madagascar, and rhiad and the bedouins. theyre all awesome, but im just a tad dissapointed. i guess i was expecting alot after 15 years, but its still very good. however its borderline emo, its very dark and serious, as opposed to previous albums, but once again its still great

Gn'r is up there at the top of greatest bands, along with ac/dc, led zep + pink floyd.
Il buy the damn album just for the fact that it isnt a hip hop/rap/pop song that sounds identical to every other one out at the moment, no matter how bad it is.... it can't be as bad as 50 cent.
In the end its all about the music, for example i hate oasis with a vengeance but i concede that one or two of their songs are alright.

The songs kick! Axl is amazing! I’ve been waiting since 1998+ when I got the first set of leaks. The new ones (same song) quality is better. Only do right and true GNR fans will give back by buying the album. These people leaving negative remarks are here for spite, only. I’ve seen people say, they’re just going to steal the songs they like when it comes out. Some are out of spite, in lieu of Axl, being the only original member. Axl didn't leave GNR the others did. Quit being selfish, because you want to live their life. You’re all losers and should be kicked in the head. Intelligent people don't compare unpolished music to other songs done by the band and say they suck, without hearing the finished product. It's commonsense. The new band can play I saw them live and they kicked ass. Don't punish them anybody in there right mind would join gnr. I love these new songs great lyrics from Mr.Rose much better then anything on Velvet Revolvers liberturd and can hang in some aspects with contraband. I will say it's to late for the masterpiece that Axl is seaking with this album but it will still be a huge deal and a great album. I don't want to see anymore Chinese Democracy tours without the album. The masterpeice will be the orignal band back together with a album then the biggest tour ever. That will happen no matter what. Gotta somehow pay for the most expensive album ever made.

I just wish Axl would lose the braids!! I absolutely hate them! I have listened to GNR since day 1. I have continued to listen to them through all the bandmate changes. They sounded great then and they sound great now. And if people would stop and think about it......just how many years was the original band together? Axl has spent just as many years with Duff and Slash as he has Robin and some of these other guys. And what about Dizzy? Dizzy has been with him forever. Now if Dizzy were to leave......I would say there could be some problems replacing him! I'm so tired of people whining about the new lineup. Get over it. Axl's voice is what makes GNR!! If Joe Elliot was to leave Def Leppard I don't think Def Leppard would be the same!! So what if it had been Axl to leave the band, do you think they could have replaced him and get as close of a match with a singer as he has with guitars and drums?

I've heard 8 or so tracks off Chinese Democracy and it really is a class above Libertad. I think that he needs to lose a few bits of a few songs that take them from brilliant to what-might-have-been. Very good stuff though - he just needs to get the 'kin thing out! From not really caring too much about this I now really, really want to hear the lot. I hope Axl does not make the same mistake as Illusion & fail to cut crap songs.
