New Interpol - "The Heinrich Manuever"
Earlier this month, you got a blurry taste of "The Heinrich Manuever" from Our Love To Admire, the Interpol LP out 7/10. Now, thanks to exciting advances in radio-ripping technology, and heads up from a few Stereogum readers, you can enjoy the tune (minus the first two seconds) in pristine 192 kbps compressed audio. The tune doesn't present the directional shift suggested by the group's wintry website makeover and Carlos' new floppy-coiff (dude speaks through his hair). To be perfectly honest, we're thinking "Slow Hands Pt. II." But this is a strong single, sure to grow on us after even more listens, and we're so digging the haunting synth flourishes in the chorus.
So who's Heinrich?

You're right about "Slow Hands pt. II", but I was also thinking "PDA pt. II". It's basically classic Interpol which is good, but - judging from the clips of the 3 new songs on YouTube - if it took 2+ plus to make this album, why didn't they do anything different with their sound?

They didn't even start recording until January, so the two+ years is actually like four months. They've been working pretty much non stop since TOTBL came out, so they took a much deserved break.

yeah people seem eager to forget about them. first of all, disregard trying to pin the sound of the album by this clip of a single. i think it sounds great. the song is pretty good. their up to their similar sound but i think that should be embraced if the album is solid.
there's a ton of bands that always put out similar sounding records but theyre great and people love them. quit the backlash so early. like predetermined....

I don't give a damn about anyone else's opinion, I love Interpol. This is a great song, though not one of their absolute best. Still, it's likely to grow on me. I can't wait for the album. Old sound or new sound, it still sounds like Interpol to me.

When I first heard it I was slightly horrified at the made-for-radio production but it's growing on me quite a lot and it's full of differences for the detail-oriented fan. The other songs that they have played are amazing as well in my opinion, and I'm really really thrilled for the album to finally come soon. This is a lovely little song, very catchy, and yeah, not amazing, I don't think but not every song has to be. It just has to bring something new to the table. With this new material I am confident that they're delivering the "goods".

Their Coachella set made time stand still. It sounded like they played "Slow Hands" seven or eight times and interspersed with the approximately the same number of "PDAs" and "Obstacle #16, #9 and #23." It all sounded like a Psychedelic Furs gig without the hits.

As a former student of Prof. Brown, I can confirm his coinage of the term "Heinrich Maneuver" to explain a facet of Heinrich Schenker's music theory. I can also confirm that Prof. Brown is a fan of Interpol - I myself got into the band based on his recommendation.
