New Juana Molina - "Un Día"

thubmnail icon: New Juana Molina - "Un Día"

Next month, Argentinian vocalist, songwriter (aka spellcaster) Juana Molina's releasing her fifth album in a dozen years Un Día. She recorded at her place outside Buenos Aires, singing and playing everything, minus some guitar work by Gareth Dickson from Vashti Bunyon's band. The looping, loping, super rhythmic, horn-laced title track (or trek), translated "one day," serves as the album's stage-setting opener -- it feels like some sort of dawn breaking sing-a-long. Lyrically, we're told "Un Día"'s repeated chant goes something like this when translated: "One day I will sing the songs with no lyrics and everyone can imagine for themselves if it's about love, disappointment, banalities or about Plato." Since I don't speak the language, I guess that's already an option.

Seriously... discovering Marnie's "Ruler" and Juana's "Un Dia" was like a mini unexpected "Revolver" like experience this past week. This has a hell of a lot more spirit of the Beatles than.... better not to say... I don't want to give them any press. Here's to a new age!
