New Kanye West - "Stronger"
If there's one thing aside from shameless self-promo Kanye can say he's learned by Graduation day, it's how to pick a sample -- and on "Stronger," Mr. West bundles both skills quite tidily on the way to his MC degree. Daft Punk-ophiles got psyched when Kanye announced his forthcoming LP would have a track sampling "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" (and a vid starring the robots themselves -- make a note for his next award show stage crashing speech), sure to hit with club kids and indie folks alike. There's a high-quality radio rip floating around, and its invasive "This is a Mark Ronson Authentic Shit exclusive sive sive sive" DJ announcements are offset by hearing Kanye offer that "you can be my black Kate Moss tonight." Grab your blow and your smokes and take him up on it at Nah Right.

He has done this so many times. Curtis Mayfield, Ray Charles, Daft Punk. The list goes on and on. All of his best singles do that in a way that will have everyone on the dance floor. A lot of his fans don't even know or care how directly he samples. They just can't resist his beats. Killer beat. He takes the best parts of already great songs, adds drum beats, and viola. If he was a one-trick pony producer, I would be upset. He's made some hot tracks on his own though.
I refuse to listen to his cover of Young Folks. Seriously though can you think of a more mainstream rapper with higher indie cred? Jon Brion, Thom Yorke, Peter, Bjorn and John, Daft Punk, his love of Franz Ferdinand? He's a douchebag of course, but he's onto something there. Maybe he can learn to sample in a more artful way. I'll give his next couple of singles a pass than my patience will start to run out.

This one snippet of "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" - the higher pitch part of it's chorus - is too much of an amazing sample for this song. Normal to above par Kanye rapping built around a Puff Daddy and the Family-quality chorus doesn't cut it.
DP themselves used this specific part of the song to seriously orgasmic results in their touring live set from Coachella and all last year.

First off, Kanye didn't really produce this track. This is A-Trak all the way. That's not speculation, it's a fact. Secondly, I've loved Daft Punk since '96. I've seen them perform twice. I've seen them DJ a handful of times. I love all their side projects. I've even met Thomas and Guy-Manuel in person...but what fucking right does that give me (or anybody else) to say who they can or can't allow to sample their music? If you love Daft, who cares who samples them! You talk about "'butchering' and 'this song sucks'"...who cares what you think. Everyone needs to calm down. I love the fact that people are talking about this so much though. To those hating on kanye...the song is catchy, well-produced, fun, and easy to dance to.
