New Laura Veirs - "To The Country"

Stereofave Laura Veirs has put the finishing touches on her third record for Nonesuch and the first track, recorded in Johnny and June Carter Cash's Tennessee cabin studio, is a gem. Producer/bandmate Tucker Martine (The Decemberists) keeps it spacious, building around Laura's delicate, earnest vox with spare acoustic picking, fiddle, hand claps and jazz legend (and labelmate) Bill Frisell's subtle guitar lines. The first accoutrement of note is Laura's call-and-response with the eight-voice Cedar Hill Choir (triple tracked!), a choice possibly informed by that French children's choir's arrangements of her tunes. Regardless, it's decidedly Sufjan-y (Soof-y? Sufi?), another notch in their branch of mutual admiration. You must download.

It's the song Beth Orton wishes she wrote.

Most of the album was actually recorded in Tucker's studio in Seattle, but this track was indeed recorded in Johnny and June Carter Cash's cabin in TN.

This is, so far, the only Stereogum recommended artist that has really stuck with me. If that means any thing to anybody.

I can't wait to get home so I can d/l this.

Thanks, Scott.

this album is FANTASTIC, start to finish...not that i was surprised. think we'll get lucky enough for another mercury lounge-sized show when she tours this album? i would sure hope so, though i know that was probably a one time thing.

the album has leaked, so for those of you who are impatient piraters like myself, search it out and download it.

hadn't made the sufjan connection before but it's indeed there.

thanks for the chuckle re: beth orton. she could never even approach laura veirs.

What a tune again, Miss Laura Veirs, I can't wait till I see her again on stage and I'm deffo going to Paris for her show to come... I'm a little bit confused though, on what album is it going to be released ? I thought she was out with a new record on 28, March...??
