New Long Winters - "Fire Island, AK"

"John Roderick writes songs that make you feel like you’ve been talking to someone really interesting in an airport for the last hour and, although you know you’ll never see them again, you just told them your whole life story and a part of you will love them forever."

That's Barsuk's way of saying John Roderick writes great songs.

Long Winters' Putting The Days To Bed (out 7/25) won't disappoint anyone who loved their last two LPs (I'm listening to Worst You Can Do now and wondering why I don't listen to it more). The band's had a dozen members of the years; the current incarnation finds John power popping with Eric Corson on bass and Nabil Ayers on drums.

On this tune they've gone retro -- all the way back to the NY rock renaissance of 2001.

The Long Winters - "Fire Island, AK" (MP3 Link Expired)

I love the song, but it's not really representative of PTDTB, which is a bit twangier than I expected (in a good way). You should really buy it and listen to the whole thing. Stereogum gives it an 8.4815162342.

After hearing the new album a few times, "Fire Island, AK" is easily the best song on the album, and definitely one of the best most catchiest numbers of the summer! I definitely think that this doesn't represent the rest of the album, for this sticks out as a sore thumb that kind of doesn't fit in, but turns out being the shining star. So hopefully my comment and this post don't jade the rest thinking that you're going to get 11 songs that sound like this, when you should all know a L-Dub record is always eclectic.

I love the Long Winters. If I could have their babies, I would gladly birth them. Even though I'm a guy and I assume I would have to do so out of my ass. And that would hurt.

If the album is anything like that, then it must be quite good

I like the album probably better than their other ones. Its a lot catchier and it grabs you right away, unlike the debut. "Teaspoon" and "Rich Girl" are my faves right now.

This album is totally fantastic, it really is the perfect remedy for summer doldrums -- it's full of classic John Roderick material without being played out or predictable.
