New Michael Showalter - "Erotica (Radio Edit Version)" (Stereogum Premiere)

A very special debut album for ya today, and if we were following protocol on talking about a debut from an artist we love, this would be a Band To Watch post. Only, we've bowed in reverence to Mr. Showalter since his days with The State and their Poorly Researched Guide To The United States, and for that classic dance sequence in Wet Hot American Summer. Plus, he's not a band. But he is a master doodler, and as such, the time has come for a long overdue comedy record.

Sandwiches & Cats is its name, probably because a) Michael loves describing foodstuffs down to the very last crumb and b) some woman brought a cat to a taping of the Union Hall stand-up sets that are featured on the album. She got verbally abused (tenderly, of course) by Michael in a classic riff, hence the album title. We attended the late set that night; based on his banter a full hour later, clearly it left an impression (and again, hence the title).

But big thanks to Showalter for doing some music bits on S&C; makes our lives finding an excuse to write about it much easier. While nearly all the straight-talk stuff were pulled from tapes of the Union Hall sets, the music was done in a recording studio. So what we have for you is the stand-up "Intro To Erotica" followed by the studio "Erotica (Radio Edit Version)," a song with lyrics combining two of Michael's side jobs: writing adventure journalism, and writing, yes, erotica.

The "Radio Edit Version" differs from the "Explicit" version mainly in Michael's use of deliciously creative genital euphemisms. We don't want to give 'em away (you're just gonna have to get the album), but ...OK, an example. Like in the surreptitiously hot librarian bit, instead of saying he caught a glimpse of her "pretty little teapot dripping boiling hot water all over the floor"? It's more like her "juicy wet pussy dripping boiling hot cum all over the floor." Little stuff like that.

But more importantly, this promo shot is fucking fantastic.

For reference. A man of our own hearts.

this cd is pretty funny, the explicit vs. non-explicit is clever too. Patton Oswalt has some good jokes about how cleaning up swear words for censors is often more graphic, though acceptable
