New Modest Mouse - "Dashboard"

Some radio station got their paws on We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank and a diligent radio-ripper posted the first taste of the studio sessions at Hipinion (via MOKB). Cut and paste the URL and change the "x"s to "t"s before being treated to "Dashboard. No animated DJ commentary (ala Arcade Fire), but it does boast Johnny Marr, background moans, and some four-to-the-floor dance action.

Enjoy.

UPDATE: Forget this radio-rip nonsense. Stream a clean cut of the track here.

Hmmm...Brock's voice on this sounds different. I sure miss their earlier stuff...really raw and loud.

I give this a 3 out of 5 stars.

niiice! i'm loving the horns left over from the last album. can't wait to hear the rest, and at a higher bit rate, natch.

About time. I heard Johnny Marr is in Modest Mouse now. I'm really excited to hear the rest of the album to see is Issac and boys have stepped it up from the last record

This song is basically a rip-off "Crosseyed and Painless" by the Talking Heads, though it is expanding upon it to a degree. But I'd rather listen to the Talking Heads.
Also, that strings thing sounds like something the Arcade Fire has done better in the past.

This is just not a great song. It's merely decent. But it has nothing to do with the stylistic differences from earlier Modest Mouse material. I'm sure they could pull something off like this, but they haven't yet.
:(
I was hoping this would be awesome.
This video kind of rules, though:

How is it that no one said anything about the "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" reference?

John Candy was indie as fuck. RIP

Modest Mouse needs to stop this poppy bullshit and go back to the basics.

-very disappointed

There's a cleaner version, in which the horns are downplayed.

Right there.

It makes a world of difference.

this song is more like the view than float on
its still pretty fucking good
im still syked for the new album, the only thing that worries me are the lyrics...isaac brocks are supposed to be fucking great and these are mediocre
...it sound much better than the bootleg of the like show in LA, but thats only because the dude who recorded it was talking the whole time

For everyone wanting Modest Mouse to go back to there demo, shitty-playing roots. Go to the store, buy a guitar, start playing. By the time you're playing as good as Modest Mouse is playing now, some new kids will want you to sound like you did when you first learned "Back in Black"

i am disappointed initially. i am not looking for modest mouse to return to their roots, which i do like. they should grow. i was hoping that with the three year gap between this upcoming album and Good News For People Who Love Bad News we would hear some growth. this song does not convince me of this.
however, i will certainly be picking the album up as soon as i can.
wasn't it scheduled for release this past fall?

I absolutely despise all of you fucking smug ass indie snobs. Just because it wasnt recorded on a portable karaoke machine in Brock's basement doesnt mean its not good music. This song is great and the rest of the album is going to be great too. Quit being so fucking trendy. Listen to the music and have a mind of your own.

Kathleen rocks. that's the best explanation for so much of the bullshit going on in the here and now.
People are trying to damn hard to be "different" and they are all one in the same. Indie is trendy...ah, who woulda thunk it.
p.s. It's a great song. Talking Heads is a great influence to have and MM wears it well, on their own terms.

Mushuguypan yum!

The ocean does breathe salty.
You can float on.
The good times are killing me.
I love the dance hall.

I so agree with Nick. Modest Mouse, while not quite so indie as they may have been, still puts out amazing music (Dashboard being prime example).

I may have not been a follower of MM since they began, but i have heard their songs of earlier times. I would just like to say that Almost every single MM song i have heard has givin me a kind of tru love in some sort of way. From Truckers Atlas to Black Cadillacs, i love them all. My only wish is that people can enjoy the music as much as i do on a daily basis.

And on the issue of MM not being Indie anymore, who cares as long as they dont sell out like too many bands have done in the past. As long as they keep making music, and as long as they dont change who they are inside, i am happy with whatever they choose to do.
