New Montag (Ft. Final Fantasy) - "Softness I Forgot Your Name"

"Best Boy Electric" (MP3 here was a fair example of most of Going Places' swing; songs duck in and out of propulsive, electro-lacquered sheen. But Montag's got the most impressive roster of indie rock assists this side of Dntel, so we wanted to share one of the album's collabs too (full tracklist after the jump). While the cameos certainly shape the soundscapes (M83 on "I Have Sound," for example), none redefine Montag's aesthetic as does Final Fantasy. Owen Pallett's orchestral idiosyncrasies are all over the vocal melodies, the background harmonies, and obviously the pizzicato string arrangements. (CORRECTION: Mr. Montag himself, Antoine Bédard, actually did all the strings and arrangements on the record; Owen only provided vocals on this track.)

I'm sorry, but I'm failing to see the fascination here. I won't dis it, but hey, it's definitely not the best. I suppose if you like Michael Buble or something, it'd be great.

Quit Your Day Job: Ungdomskulen

The Bergen trio Ungdomskulen play proggy post punk, mixing chops and hooks with a sense of humor. But they don't sound like Primus. When I was in Norway a couple years ago, "Ungdomskulen" seemed to be on everybody's lips (or...

Premature Evaluation: Beck - Modern Guilt
