New Muse - "Supermassive Black Hole"
So many of you excitedly sent us the new Muse single, without indicating whether you like it or not. Maybe that's because, like Stereogum, you're still undecided. (Or favorite e-mail came from Andrew, who attached the tune and wrote: "I was all like 'what?'")
We hear ya Andrew. Did Max Martin write this?
Muse - "Supermassive Black Hole" (MP3 Link Expired)
Posted at 1:45 PM in MP3

Anyone else think this is a bit Radiohead-esque? Especially the pre-chorus bit. And the Myxamatosis intro.
One more vote for undecided, but I'd bet anything it'll be all over the radio for ages...

It kinda sucks. I was really excited and everything, but Franz Ferdinand just do dance rock |-------------------------------------------------| this much better.

Everyone is saying it sounds like a Britney Speras song. Like that's a bad thing!

Oops! I meant Britney SPEARS.
Sorry, too busy dancing to the Muse song...

It wucks big time!

I immediately hate it. But if I listen it again I start to love it (it's so different...)

"Anyone else think this is a bit Radiohead-esque? Especially the pre-chorus bit. And the Myxamatosis intro."
Is't Muse pretty open about trying to be Radiohead circa 1998?
Score = -1
Wow - it's like Queens of the Stone age and Spoon's "I turn my camera on"....and yet, not nearly as good as either of them...
boring.
Score = 0
I like it. But I like pretty much everything Muse, so.
And, yeah - what mrbenning said. If you're surprised that this sounds like late-90s Radiohead (as if that's a bad thing), you haven't been listening to Muse much lately.
Score = 0
Whoa - I assumed they were trying (and failing) to not sound like Radiohead. But apparently they don't care. Mah bad.
Score = 0
this sounds like another bad Lenny Kravitz song.
Score = 0
Entirely and utterly forgettable.

This is not good. What's with the robot voice? Fuckin' mutts.
You can only get away with plagiarism for so long before people realize you lack any real interesting muscial ability.

Muse is dead !
This supermASSive black HOLE cannot do any good to Music... Muse's ambition is not enlarging the borders of music nor creating a new sound, but just enlarging the number of people who listen to them, I think...
Drum is not dead.
Listen to those that got something to tell !

I think it's fucking great. But I obviously have a gaping asshole for a mouth so what do I know.
Also, I really like how it says Girly Medium under Ben Gibbards picture.
He is never on my radar but I find that hi-lar-ee-ass.
Finally, I really love this song. I love it so much. I can't stop the liquid shit from pouring from my butt-mouth.
Score = 0
A) Yeah, this sounds like a britney Spears song.
B) I love it anyway.
C) I, having lived under a rock for most of my life, am not actually very familiar with Radiohead and because of all these comparisons, I'm going to go check them out now.
Thank you.

Its a good song but it doesn't sound like Muse. Where's the classical piano?

I like this. Love the Queen-like chorus.

I certainly do like it now. And the robot voice is awesome - pumps out the low-end in the car speakers just like it should. I think this is the most enjoyable single they've released, to be honest.
So they're having fun and not making music for brooding losers to soundtrack their anime videos with anymore. Big loss.
Score = 0
ha ha, ditto on Lenny Kravitz, s'what came to my mind as well.

I love it. Sounds like Millionaire, and Muse said that was one of their influences, so, well, there you go.

Cant stand Muse.
Kinda dig this song.

I'd dance to it in a club if I was completely trashed. It doesn't totally suck.
I give it bonus points because it doesn't reek of angsty melancholia like their previous CDs.

i adore muse, but this is just bad.
i much prefer bellamy when paying homage to rachmaninov.
Score = 0
I adore Muse as well and I think this track is great, it grew on me the second time around. Definitely a great song and I like that Muse is able to so easily switch from what they have been doing to something like this. Excellent! thanks stereogum!

I think it's fun. I'd dance to this.

Muse's "SMBH" is a different and interesting branching out for the band. With all the criticism in the past, Matt Bellamy and Muse know what they are doing. Believe me I know from working in a music store and constantly hearing from customers as I play "Origin of Symmetry" or "Absolution" when they say, "Is this the new Radiohead". The general public has no sense of depth perception when it comes to deciphering music. If anything, Muse has advanced and even challenged the pedestal Radiohead has reigned for years. Muse is not Radiohead. Radiohead is not Muse. How can you knock a three piece band that puts out more sound than any band to date. I can honestly say that there is no other band out there that can create a song like "SMBH" and get away with it. Matt definately is giving Prince a run for his money.

Normally when I heard a song for the first time and I like it,it means that I would like to get married to it forever but when I heard Supermassive Black Hole it certainly wasn't love at first sight....maybe I need to listen to it for a couple more times to know whether we're meant for each other....
Score = 0
Yeah, I don't know... My first reaction was "this can't be Muse". I thought maybe someone was taking the piss and uploaded some random band and labeled it Muse. I'm not quite sure if I like it or not, but hey, it sure is different...
Score = 0
this song fucking blows. seriously. and i love muse. i've loved them since i saw them opening for the foo fighters and chili peppers in 1999. i've always been drawn into how their formula is pretty much take a classical piano track and turn it into prog-rock.
this new track is NOT that formula. some bands can get away with trying new stuff, but this just doesn't work for muse. it sounds like they're taking a recent madonna track and doing a bad cover of it. where's the piano? where's the arpeggios? where's the FUCKING RIPPING ROCK GUITAR SOLO that matt bellamy does best?
yawn. i hope the rest of the record isn't like this.

this song SUX. is this really MUSE? it's hard to believe. and i love MUSE. I hope the rest of the album sounds NOTHING LIKE THIS. or i'll hate it.

ive only liked Muse since Absolution - the production and heavier sound with less whining really helped them.
I like this, but as someone mentioned, i think it's Millionaire they're copying, not Radiohead. And I dont think it's such a bad thing, either.

This sounds like something that Self (Matt Mahaffey) might have written. (Reminds me of "Busy Sending Me".)

I've been going nuts trying to remember where I've heard that main riff from... and I finally figured it out. It's "Mad Dog God Dam" by Elastica.
Anyway, it took a while for it to grow on me, but I think the song's great.
Score = 0
yikes. i was quite terrified, then as soon as it finished i wanted to hear it all over again, which must count for something, i guess.
its like prince meets jack white meets a giant supercomputer... on jupiter.

If it's an Elastica riff, we should probably start going through Wire's back-catalogue to determine which song they nicked from this time.

I'ts Very good,...very cool name to the differents is..
i'ts a super rusty muse song... rusty ever maybe..
his voice is rustyer to... it sounds cosy i think, it will surprise... like absolution that was also very different like the others.....
SO here is the new DIfferent sound of MUSE!!!!
enjoy it!!!!!!!! :) dont forget they are so good!!!!!!!!!!!! and won't let u down..

MUSE are awesome! They have NEVER written a song I dont love. they have always fused lush guitar sections with awesome techno sweetness, all topped off with the succulent bass line. HMMM.....
BUT! I am disappointed. Super Massive Black Holes is very lush. VERY lush. but compared to all the other stuff, it is not very lush. I'm wetting my pants for the new album: black holes and revelations. I NEED IT!!!!!!!!!!

this is something i'd expect from aussie band 'regurgitator'. sounds different but it'll grow on me.

I'm a bit undecided about this song but those who are comparing them to radiohead are talking absolute crap.I think that its the same kind of lyrics but the words have a kind of underlying maning, or that might just be me.

well.
i was a little surprised on first hearing this. i mean- muse have always been about the incredible piano and guitar- but I guess they're just trying something new. I mean- i can't say this song doesnt want to make me dance. I'd get up and dance to it!
I dont really get people who compare them to radiohead. I mean- there might be some similarities, but there's a sort of streak that seperates them.
Ive been a big fan of muse- love their stuff- and im going to get the new album of course.
its alittle different- but after a few listens its grown no me. I hope the rest of the albums good

-Mathew Bellamy- : "Yeah, it does'nt really represent what the album is like, it's a bit more of a one off, but you know, there is quite a few surprises on the new album, of different things we tryed a bit, that we hav'nt really done before, but this one of the most unusual ones, on the album, supermassive black hole."
Score = 0
We must remember this is there first SINGLE. this is what they use to get the average listener hooked. I'll bet there album will have a lot of different feels. They chose this dancy little diddy to be their "crossover" as it were. It tickles me by the way....
Score = 0
hmmm well it's certainly different from their other stuff. It's gonna take a few more listens before I like it.
Does anyone else think Matt sounds like Prince on this song????

I adore muse, everything they have ever done, all the b-sides etc
this song is different,yes, but I think it displays their tendancy to do whatever they decide to do incredibly well
and as the quote from matt said- it doesnt reflect the whole album.
Even if the album does sound like this, I won't be disappointed: you have to embrace change!

At first I thought this song was a bit too crap and rejected it to be a muse song, as I love all their stuff etc. But then i listened to a couple of their new songs on the radio (radio 1 big weekend) and it was transformed into a heavier, better muse song, a kind of which I have grown to love,
so now i can't wait for the album (bring on july 3rd)

as one of the comments above, i didnt think it was muse at first ..but i liked it. i know that the album has diffrent stuff than this, like knights of cydonia. <3 now that ive listened to it for a while it just gets better.. i love the chorus, dissing the princelike voice though.. maybe if he had gone down a notch.. hm.
ive always loved muse, all their previous records lies CLOOOOSE TO MY HEART, and i bet this one will as well.. or I hope.. :)

Muse is amazing. I've been with them forever, I've always loved them. This new song is definitly very different for them to be doing and it doesn't really sound like them. The chorus is very Queen-like and good. The pre-chorus is fucking amazing, the vocals are amazing, there's not a damn way you're getting that out of your head once you hear it. This is a damn good new song by Muse. Any Muse fan is sure to love this new song.

I like it. It´s |MUSE| - only because it´s not all the same like all older songs, it still rocks. Looking forward to buy the album
And to the guy saying the thing about musical ability,....wtf!?

For those of you who are dissapointed Supermassive Blackhole isn't what the whole album is gonna sound like. I have heard Starlight and it's close to the Muse you guys seem to be hankering for. I think once you get over the initial shock of the scissor sister-ish sound then you'll love it. I love it. It's different. If the song had the same sound as the songs from Absolute then you would all be complaining about that. I love Muse's new song and I know I am going to love the rest of the album. Muse always find some way to be different and that's what makes them great!

Surprise, Surprise...
Well, I got kinda stunned when I listen to that song the first time. It sounds like dance music. Actually THIS IS DANCE MUSIC.
But nevertheless I like it. I love music like Franz Ferdinand etc...
The only point I´m disappointed about is, that this song is from muse.
whatever... Gotta dance... ;-)
Score = 0
This is not muse taking a step forward, its muse taking a billion trillion steps back... Although the new album is likely to be their most propular, it's also likely to be their worst (although even that is tons better than bands like Franz Ferdinand). One positive note is that Knights of Cydonia holds some hope...

fuck yez all, it rocks like everything else matt bellamy does!!

I cant belive mine eyes!!!!! how can u slag mude so? yes this song ent as gud as sum but its bloody better than others. also bein a radiohead fan i can say that theres only a very slight lean towards radiohead but not much. go back 2 ur pop songs n leave rock 2 the pro's!
Score = 0
I heard it on the radio before I knew who it was by and thought "I quite like this, but its a bit like something I've heard before" i'm still not sure weather that was because I recognised it was Muse or because it sounded like someone else, but I definitely do like it.
Who cares if it sounds like anyone else? thats what happens isnt it? pop music will eat itself and all that, if its a good song its a good song!
Score = 0
u may well slate me for this, but after the first few times of listening to the track, all I could think of for similarity was the scissor sisters!
Have bellamy and the crew had more than just a re-think of their musical style?
its asesome, no matter what the inspiration
Score = 0
well..... it's different then i'm used to. i agree with music times, where's the classical piano?! when i heard the name i was thinking it would be like "space dementia". but in stead i got this thing that i'm still undecided about. i'm thinkin' it could be cool live with a real guitar sound.
Score = 0
Knowing Muse, the next single off the album is gonna be the biggest song they ever pull off. look at absolution, first it was time is running out,i wasn't really into it,but then Hysteria and Stockholm syndrome came after...oh man..i still get turned on by those soaring riffs and phased bass and pounding drums
Score = 0
Muse is one of the few bands that don't put bad songs on their albums. This doesn't have the same "attitude" as their previous albums, but I do like it alot. I'll be curious to hear the rest.
Score = 0
I am an obsessive Muse fan. I have every song they've ever done, I've seen them multiple times, etc. And I hated this song. At first. But for some reason, I kept coming back to the song. And now I'm obsessed (as I should be with anything Muse). Give this song a couple of listens - you won't be able to resist it!
Score = 0
I love the intro to this, then at times he sounds like a cross between justin timberlake, abba, pretty dissapointed with the song really, but june 12 they release a new album so they have 10-11 songs to make up for it, one of the great things about muse is they are quite impossible to copy... specially with that manson custom of his, but i don't think any1 would want to copy this...
Score = 0
I applaud Matt Bellamy for having a go (and a damn good one at that) at something he's always wanted to. His musical horizon is obviously a lot broader than a lot of 'die-hard' anti-electronic rockers, and I think thats ironically awesome considering that Matt Bellamy "borrows" chord sequences from CLASSICAL MUSIC composer Rachmaninov in 'Origin of Symmetry', yet most fail to realise this fact: that Muse is already breaking a lot of 'rules' that most 'rockers' would frown upon.
and MUSE don't sound like Radiohead.... that's a load of bull****... they're music is totally different, their voices just sound a bit similar. LIVE WITH IT
Score = 0
i thought the track was quite different than i expected. But the more i listen to it, The more i LIKE IT!!!!!
Score = 0
ITS JUST SUPERMASSIVE!!!
Score = 0
I can't be bothered to quote all the inaccurate generalising quotes regarding what Muse have and should sound like. With regards to structure it's no more/less poppy than the likes of Plug In Baby or Our Time Is Running Out. Sound fuck all like anything recent by Maddona. The beats aren't the standard disco beats endlessly circulating the indie clubs at the moment. No syncopated hi-hats and the like.
So what a band who want to change their style. One would assume a band who can be as overblown and pompous as Muse have a sense of humour about themselves. An ability to enjoy their music.
It's not all about spoonfeeding their fans standard what they've come to expect. It's not all so radically different to a couple of tracks and Absolution. You know the ones.
Why does no-one want bands to grow or change?
Beyond me.

Muse made really good Alternative-Rock but the new stuff is some kind of lappy pop!!
Showbiz and Origin of Symmetry are two really good albums. But Absolution was already far away from the good old MUSE-Style. The new single, Supermassive Black Holes, isn't MUSE anymore.
What a pitty, but if they go on like this they are getting always more worse.

For a start, MUSE sound nothing like the whiny, suicidal crooners that are Radiohead, a band that can only dream of being at MUSE's level. I would draw comparisons with Supermassive Black Hole and the Pussycat Dolls before Thom Yorke's band.
MUSE are my favourite band since the Spice Girls went their seperate ways, and their latest offering only further enforces that...it's incredible. You think "WTF?...I never want to dance to anything else again!" It's sexy and extremely infectious, and I'm creaming myself over the prospect of owning Black Holes and Revelations!
N.B: "dudeface", Rachmaninov is a Romantic composer, NOT a classical one.

Bring on the new album, i can't wait !

I heard an interview with muse from some dutch guy and he said matt bellamy sounded like prince in this song. I was like what the hell, but it's true! It definately grows on you though. More rocking next time please.

this song is a crying shame. but we can forgive this time. computer voice gives me a feeling of shame while listening, i can't stand that. matt still has good voice. starlight is not so bad.
i allways had a bad subconscious voice im my head telling me that the guys are lucky stupids reading science fiction books. i was ok, till they didn't show that in SMBH. is it a love song? is supermassive black hole put there to make it more artificially interesting?? do not do that again...
Score = 0
The more you listen to the song, the more you get to love it... It's kinda different for Muse but who cares, Muse rules anyway!
P.S. Starlight is so beautiful
Score = 0
Really, the only thing that came in my mind when i listened to this song is 'what happened to the old muse?'I'm such a crazy fan of Muse and all, I recognize that matt bellamy's voice really stands out in this song but really, what Muse have basically done is sell out their style that made them so special, that made them Muse and no one else.
People say that they copied radiohead's style. Yea. But what they did is that they got inspired by them and made something of their own with it. Now that's creativity, it's what made them stand out. But now, i hear this song and basically I'm just like 'what the hell?'.
Seriously, i love everything muse does. It's just this time I was a bit disappointed.
One more thing : bands should never ever sell out their style. Especially bands like muse.It's the worst thing they can do. Trust me on that one.
Score = 0
Yea but you guys are right. Starlight is one of the prettiest songs I've ever heard. I'm actually really glad muse kept what made them special. It's just that supermassive black holes is just like wwoaaa.You know what i mean?

sounds like Midnite Vultures-era Beck. Shit guitar solo though.
Score = 0
Listen, i love Muse, they are immence! especially live...possibly one of the best live bands in britain, but they are no way like radiohead, Muse are far more upbeat and heavyer that Radiohead even with this song (which is great).
You guys arnt looking at the whole picture, look at how muse have proggressed from Showbiz to SMBH...its a dignified change, from album to album, that is how bands survive for so long....if muse were to have made a song similar to Absolution or Origin, they would have had there fucking heads ripped off by the critics.
When i first listened to SMBH i didnt like it, ill be honest...but now i love it! I cant stop playing it on guitar (mainly because its easy lol) it is a brillant song, and i have heard some other live songs at the Radio 1 Big Day Out in Dundee at the weekend from www.muse-download.com titled 'Knights of Cydonia' and 'Starlight' they are both such good songs, and i am sure i will soil my pants when i hear the album it will be that good.
I can see what muse are doing, but i guess we will no when the album comes out in the next few weeks!
Score = 0
It is not like any other muse song, it sounds a bit like something out of Prince. It is almost sort of funky. I like it as it is different, I don't like it because i like muse.
Score = 0
Ugh. It sounds like a madonna track.
I hope they weren't lying when they said the rest of the album is different.
Its a shame cos this album will probably be the most popular
Cos you'll get the same little pre-teens that LOVE fall out boy and Panic! At the Disco absolutely in love with Muse now. Upon hearing old albums afterwards may even exclaim 'Ugh. Whats this crap!? THIS ISNT MUSE!'
Well this isn't Muse. Its fucking awful and I didn't even realise it was them at first and had to check there wasnt another band named Muse.
They've gone horribly horribly wrong on this one.
Score = 0
Bee Gees meets Prince meets Nine Inch Nails on funny drugs - this was the first thing I thought when I heard supermassive black hole ... and honestly my thoughts have not really changed by now
Score = 0
Come on guys, you can call muse 'crap' because of one song! Remember there is still a whole album to come out, so give them a break...the song is great anyway, its interesting, funky and different.
Theres no way that muse will become mainstream pop gash like those stupid punky shitty bands like panic! at the disco/greenday and all the rubbish, muse are a 'real' band and possibly one of the best in britain, they know it, and so do REAL muse fans, not the fans that whimper like bitches when they dont like ONE song they they have probably heard once...listen to it a few times more, i bet it will grow on you.
As they have said this album is varied, opposed to Absolution, which is they way to go so they dont get accused of playing the same stuff all the time, so when they have the guts to try something different, dont go slagging them for it. I bet Black Holes and Revelations will be amazing.
Score = 0
Errrm.... Im a guitarist and i always get confused when people decide to air their opinions, they know for a fact that other people may not agree cos if we all had the same tastes the world would be FUCKED UP. So instead of going something like "it's shit end of" just say "i dont like it, but meh".
Anyway i sorta like it its funky gotta great heavy bass and guitar combo riff and makes you wanna bogie what the hell can be wrong with that. I mean i love shreading as much as the next person but a kick ass solo isnt the only thing that makes a song good.
Score = 0
i think everyone is getting too hung up on the idea of who muse are trying to sound like...for starters i thought the f**king comparrison to radiohead crap would have ended by now because in my opinion they have moved further away fom them with each record they release, ive been a fan of muse for years and i was not blown away by the absolution album, ive listened to it maybe 8 times the whole time ive owned it.....but this new track is worth listening to...so its not your whining pitch music/guitar solo/look im a rock god!! shite????? wanting to change your style of music and try new things and not be caught in a stereotype where you are stuck with depressive teenies saying OMG I LUUUUV YOOOOUUUU!!! and expressing this love by wearing black, chains, baggy jeans etc....is not a bad thing.....everyone moves on it is just a natural thing, in fashion, music, and age....i mean even i was a victim of the baggy jeans thing for a while, but i grew out of it....ive been through many styles infact....but i dont moan because muse has changed, i enjoy the fact they have changed...because everything does!
Score = 0
I think this song is superb. Even if it wasn't Muse it would stand out against the backdrop of all the soundalikes out there at the moment. Its something different, sure there's influences in there (Beck/Prince?), but its a great song and Muse should be applauded for expanding their range. And it won't take away the fact they are the best live band around.
Score = 1
im sorry guys but this song absolutly rocks i fukin love it yeh its different but after after 8-9 years its about time they did!!

Another masterpiece from Muse, even though some people feel that this song is nothing like muse and is actally pretty crap.
Those who think this obviously don't have a clue about music!! This may not sound like typical muse, but it is brilliant how they change the style of their music constantly. The song is extremely catchy and I think it could reach number 1 when released. It has serious potential. I don't think the rest of the album will sound like this though... there will be songs that have your amazing guitar riffs and piano pieces, so no worries about it bein all the same stuff!!! An amazing song, cannot fault it! Muse just keep on getting better and better.....

Oh my goodness, a Muse song I can boogie to! I like it, although I am also estranged by the fact that it is Muse. At least they dont sound monotonous in their sounds throughout their albums like some other bands.

This song was absolutely amazing. Yes, it's different from what they've done before, but where is it written that bands can't do something new???-Kass
I for one love the song and the new video that goes along with it. Their music is changing every album. Listen from 'Showbiz' to 'Absolution'. No one song sounds the same. All albums have themes and we have been informed that this song, by no means reflects the whole entire album. Each song on the album is different, so if you don't like this song, I'm sorry, but you aren't true Muse fans. Give them a bloody chance to change, would ya?- Vicki

hehe well said viki and kass :P what they said!!

As a first fan of Muse I found it so different, so commercial. I didn't like it, and now that I heard it 5 or 6 times I really love the song but somewhere deep in me I hope their new album will be more special, more techno rock.
Score = 0
I'm glad I wasn't the only one when downloading it who thought it was a fake. Initial reaction was WHAT THE FUCK?!?
Its funny how people admit to it being a good song, but a bad muse song (it makes no sense but I feel the same). I am so torn.... I think I now like it, but I feel ashamed and dirty at the same time.
Score = 0
Oh no, shock horror, "this is NOT Muse".
The aristocrats just won't shut up.

Muse - a great, British three piece rock band who continue to evolve.Super Massive is a perfect example of this.Musically and lyrically great;this from someone who's been mad about Rush for 25 years!!
Score = 0
It really isn't muse, and doesn't sound much like radiohead either. Muse are rock nd roll as they say, and this is dance. Its hasn't progressed from absolution, just gone off in a complete tangent. i don't think its terribly bad, but if the albums filled with stuff like this i don't think i'll but it
Score = 0
I thought it was rather more.... funky than their usual song's. More i listen to it, the more i enjoy it. Everyone said Muse were a rip-off of Radiohead when they released Muscle Museum and now everyone's saying it sounds like new Radiohead? Give it a break.
Score = 0
Wow... as you can tell from my screen name I am obviously a fan of Muse. Infact I'm the self proclaimed biggest fan of theirs in America... so nothing they do can really be bad in my eyes but this song wow... that's all I can really say... reminds me of Prince yeah like everyone eles says, but also alot of the vocals are Mayrilin Manson reminincent and the electronic guitar style distortions remind me a little of Silverchair (dunno if my fieancee would agree her being the self proclaimed chairhead and all but) I know some people don't like how different this song is compaired to their other cd's but I have read interviews with Matt and Chris about the new album and they stressed that this single was one of the thumbnails of the album (the song's that really stick out) they also said that there will be more traditional Muse songs on the album and to the people saying they still sound like Radiohead I can safely say that being a fan of both bands they are both completely different in style and sound and if this song doesn't prove it then your tone deaf. Oh and for those that think this song sucks think about how Muse might recreate it live where they really shine without so many effects and distortions... might make it all the better.
Score = 0
This song is fucking shit.....muse rock...and with this shit theyve lost their way...just like system of a down have...now they just care about selling records....rhis is shit...but i will always remember muse for who they are..not what theyve became...
Score = 0
Like a few of you I originally though it was a desperate attempt to be radio friendly and i didn't like it. But then I thought 'hmm...I'll forget it's by Muse and treat like an entirely new band' and it worked.
Supermassive Black Hole is a good tune, better than most of the shit you hear on the radio. You can actually dance to it as well wich is a rarity with Muse!
P.S.I'm going to see Muse at reading festival. YAY! :)
Score = 0
this is another amazing Muse song. It's different but it still rocks!!
Score = 0
Seriously im sick of people saying they are like Radiohead. They are bloody well not.
Bellamy's voice sounds similar to Thom Yorkes but that is it.
The new sound is different and I like it. Saying that I think Muse kick butt. Absolution one of the best albums ive ever heard.
Ive heard Knights of Cydonia of the new album as well and it rocks. Much like the Absolution stuff.
Score = 0
Very different to what I expected Muse to do, but what do you expect when the song is called: "Supermassive black hole"? The song's catchy and I feel like dancing to it; it's more obvious that the song is meant to be very tongue-in-cheek when you see the video:

on first listen i was shocked.
and VERY dissappointed
i didnt know what to think, i thought i had downloaded the wrong thing.
the guitar sounds like something from britney spears
and he sounds like the lead singer from scissor sisters
wheres the simply BRILLIANT piano skill merging into a brilliant rock track?
i was expecting another hyper music, or thoughts of a dying atheist or maybe a bliss or new born.
nah,
dissappointed.
its alright.
but i think the fact im comparing it to there other tracks (which are all incredible) makes it sound worse.
there an awesome band and so talented. easily the best around, i think there just trying to show they can do other types of music.
they've been doing the whole rock come classical piano stufff for a while.
but heck.
i hope they carry on doing it,
Jako

At first, when I heard the beat, I was scared, because they've never had an actual dance beat before... (Why isn't it the same beat without the "beat-machine" crap?) then the guitar came in and I knew something was wrong. But it all fell apart when Matt's falsetto came through the speakers in the first verse. What? Matt's falsetto always sounded good, and he never did it unless he needed to. Now it's like he's trying to sound like a woman, something almost all other rock-falsetto-singers do. You only get a pinch of Matt's real voice hear and there. What killed it altogether however, was the robot voice at the end. Okay, there's being inspired by dance-club music, and then there's making dance club music. They should have changed their band name for this one, because this is not Muse evolving, it's not Muse at all. In fact, I feel like this is a step back for the band because they are just copying the new techno-rock phase that's hot on the radio right now, like The Killers, The Bravery, and to a lesser extent, Franz. I guess Absolution was their high point, because any album this song is on is tainted.
Worst of all, I thought maybe it'd grow on me, but by the third listen I felt my heart just go crashing to my feet as I realized it was only sounding worse the more I heard it. I feel like someone I loved dearly has died.
Score = 0
Okay, so I just saw the video, and the band's dressed up in suits with lots of make-up like Green Day when they released American Idiot. And Matt's hair is black. On top of that Matt winks at the cramera and loks at the camera like he's trying to be sexy the way a female would... yuck.
Score = 0
Well, its kinda shocking me when i noticed this song.
I don't know much about radiohead but at first i thought that it wasn't Muse singing this song.
Despite the sense of Plug In Baby (i'm listening this song while i wrote this comments), probably there must be another cool tracks in their new album.
Btw, i hope i could get their albums as soon as possible coz in here, Indonesia, it must be very late for us if we want to get a new album from Muse.

yeah shocked at first hearing
yeah listened to it again
yeah doesnt sound like muse at all
yeah still love it

Whats not to like? Muse have taken another leap into another territory, a thing which most bands won't even do the once and they have pulled off another successful step. Listen to Starlight and Knights of Cydonia aswell, they are pretty good and will let you know what the album will be like, different every song
Score = 0
OMG i havent heard the song but reading this made me cry. how could muse ever do anything wrong. i hav 82 muse tracks on itunes and yea that includes like live versions but i have yet to find a muse song that i dont love. MUSE wont die. they are one of the very few genuine bands left with sticking power.
Score = 0
I Really, in all honesty think it should be called super massive bum hole , and sent down the toilet with the rest of muse's overblown detritus brain music.
Score = 0
maybe this'll teach a few twiddly guitar freaks to open to slightly different music.(ILOVE OLD MUSE BTW AND DO THINK BELLAMY IS A BRILLIANT PLAYER). this is a grower methinks. first time thought it was too different, third listen and now it's getting good.
Score = 0
me again. listened to it a few more times and now i think IT'S FUCKING BRILLIANT

Probably most of you already heard it but here it is again. Audio quality is terrible but unlike SMBH (personally I do not like it) it sounds like muse again (bliss part 2 maybe?)

After this I still have hope in the rest of the album.

Muse you can dance to. I love it.

look guys. who thinks that this song is crap?
the first time I heard it I thought that this was the worst Muse's song. I thought that they were gonna be much worse, but if you listen to the song 5 times, you will see that this song rocks!!!!If you play guitar, this song is also really fun to play.
the best part is when he says: you set my soul alight. and when the bass player says: icebergs melting in the death of night..........
Muse's new album is gonna be at least as good as absolution.The are coming to Spain at the end of 2006 I think. I can't wait to see them.
Viva muse!!!!
Viva Radiohead!!
Viva inglaterra!!

Second listen i definitly love it...
The guitar riffs are really catchy, and Bellamy sings just in a sexy way.

I completely agree with the Millionaire comparison...Tis very good and raunchful but hopefully it doesn't all sound like this on the new album.It's a good single to release but if the album sounds like this then it could get a tad repitive.
But I shant complain..I'm glad to have my Muse back.

And the person a few comments above slagging off the video...ever heard of irony?

man, i can't believe most of you guys don't like this song. so what if its different? its SUPPOSED to be different.
i seriously can't comprehend how you guys can bash a TRIO that is able to produce this kind of sound. wow.
great fucking song.

I LOVE MUSE AND THERE NEW SONG ITS FUCKING AWSOME!!! =D =D =D MUSE ROCK THE WHOLE WORLD GO MUSE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! p.s i wana marry matt bellamy LOL

I'm really disappointed!
Muse used to be one of my favorit bands; and now they make such a boring song.
I always liked their independent and own style not comparbale to anything else. But this song is mainstream.
The old songs were sad or agressive or both. But this song has no emotions and dynamic.
It vocals sound like Prince and the backround reminds me of "Dream on" by Depeche Mode.
I just cant imagine how Matthew Bellamy would destroy the stage to this song.
Hopefully they find back to their old style.
Score = 0
what the christ?
Score = 0
Yeah, at first it didn't sound like MUSE I've known for all those years, but who cares, I love it. I don't care if Matt sounds like Prince. I don't care if it's a dance beat. All I know is that I feel so fuckin high when I listen to this song. So I guess change isn't necessarily a bad thing. NOTHING CAN GO WRONG WITH MUSE. I'm a firm believer in Matt and I'm proud.
Score = 0
It's different all right, i like the song but i don't like it as a MUSE song. I think it's important to remember it's only one song from their album and they are just having some fun(hopefully). They are way too good to actually believe that music like that is what makes a band great.
Score = 0
This track is truly worrying i think!!! Ive loved Muse as my fave band for 3 years and was looking forward to a new song after quite a while but this is... weird. I saw them live in Dec 03, and i seriously cannot imagine this song being in there set, it's just beyond there boundaries.. shouldn't of gone there.. hoping for more from the album!!
Score = 0
I agree with most posts here, where i hope this single will not reflect the album, and if history has taught us anything it won't. (plug in baby? time is running out?)
After i heard it a few times it didnt sound as bad as i first thought. Still too poppy for me though, but, Knights of Cydonia sounds pretty good.
Also, for the person who said it sounds like Regurgitator, no way dude, regurgitator excel way more when they go electro plus they're more fun & satirical.
And, someone said that muse stopped being muse after their second album. can you please explain this to me? how does one stop being themselves? maybe say that you dont like the direction they have taken, but its muse and thats their music right now so f*ck, its still a breath of fresh air in this hurly burly world of gay music

very different perspective compare to the
"showbiz" "origin of symmetry" and "absolution"
... very unique and strangely delicate..
a song that you just listen to it over and over
for no reason. i'm currently forming a band
with "muse" kind of style.. i try to imitate
Matthew Bellamy's ingenious piano patterns/style.
In overall, i think this album will be good..
muse is always interesting. <3
Score = 0
not bad.. nice riff.. but I hope there will be much better songs in the new album.
Score = 0
I love this song. I love the fact that so many people hate it, because if everyone loved it muse would get to mainstream. I hope that smbh is never played on commercial radio.
if you hate this song tell ur friends it's shit.
because i love it and i'm telling all my friends i love it.
The next person who has a whinge that this song is too different needs to realize that keeping to a winning formula isn't creativity.
anyway this song really isn't that different to a pumped up 'endlessly' and it reminds me of the riffs off origin of symmetry.
Score = 0
Well, this song it`s only the first of the album, i like it, yes, the sound changes but the other albums have the same different songs, that energy and that peace in some of the tracks, it´s different, it´s a good change, surely, many people say that sound like a pop song, maybe, just like other bands but, Muse have a unique style, and i think that a great album it´s coming.

"The general public has no sense of depth perception when it comes to deciphering music. If anything, Muse has advanced and even challenged the pedestal Radiohead has reigned for years. Muse is not Radiohead. Radiohead is not Muse."
I haven't read anything past this point, because this is exactly how I feel, and I've been saying it for years. Muse is by far my favorite band, and although they're not the most talented band in the world, they're still very talented. Muse sounds nothing like Radiohead when you really sit down and compare the two (I've done it, both bands are way too distinctive to me), and I love Muse because their music is like a melodramatic rock opera.
I sat in awe after hearing this song the first time, but I think it will just become a less-than-average Muse single. I like it much more when Matthew Bellamy switches between his amazingly high opera voice and his normal one because it shows the breadth of his vocal range. This song just doesn't do that, but it IS NOT horrendous (there's a '70s electro-dance revival right now anyway, and Muse has certainly caught on to that). Muse is britpop--part of their goal is to have a wide range of people listen to them.
P.S. I'm not saying it sounds like something from the '70s, but it's definitely electro-dance.
Score = 0
I like it. When I first heard it though I was all like "What!? Wait I must've clicked the wrong button! This isn't Muse!" It sort of sounds like it could be a dance remix od T.I.R.O or something.
Maybe they've just done a back flip and changed a bit since the other albums. It's good to have a change every now and then. Muse would be boring if they had they're songs all sounding alike, don't you think?
Score = 0
I didn't notice there was another lee who posted before I did the last one just a few minutes ago. Well I foregot to say something about the song.
I agee with Beau. I would totally hate it if muse went went mainstream. Because then it's not your favorite band anymore, it's everyone elses favorite band. Same thing happened with a few other bands that I liked and now i don't really like them that any more and they're just plain annoying to see and hear everywhere. Muse is a band that a lot of people Love, but luckily this hasn't happened to them... yet.
Score = 0
To those of you who were disapointed by the song... SHAME ON YOU!!
You guys are all like "Oh they're not the band I've come to know and love. BooHoo I'm going to cry. They're differnt now I don't like them" You people who say stuff like that are IDIOTS!!!
It's like what Lee said. Wouldn't Muse be boring if all their songs sounded alike?
Have you foregotten when Abslolution came out? It was way different frome Origen of Symmetry and Showbiz, but people grew on it. If you can do that with Absolution you can do it with Black Holes ans Revelations.
And by the way, Supermassive Black hole does not sound like radiohead or britney spears, or prince, so GET OVER IT!!
Score = 0
i'm not normally a Muse fan - i'm more into electronic stuff (depeche mode, pet shop boys, mylo, goldfrapp etc) and dance music.
but this track rocks my boat - it's awesome and i cant get the insanely catchly chorus out of my head.
just add a bit of 909 bass drum underneath, and you'd have an enormous Ibiza dance track.
that crunchy, disorted guitar sound that they've made is incredible. i've heard nothing like it before.
Score = 0
Yeah, so I have to say that after listening to the song on-and-off all day, I'm in love. Despite the fact that the continuous high voice does not compare to that used in Microcuts (which to me seems an impossible feat), I love the beat, I (still) love his voice, I love the lyrics, I LOVE THE ROBOT VOICE! The song kicks ass, and I do believe I jumped the gun with my previous post.
Score = 0
This song is a real train wreck. You listen to it over and over because you can't believe they would do something this... Britney Spears-esque. Definitely the most shockingly "what were they thinking" new release by any major band in ages. Having said that, I'll definitely get the new album, because I don't believe the whole record will sound like "Toxic," and if there's even a smidge of the genius that brought us "Plug In Baby," it will be worth it.
Score = 0
When i first heard this song i was like 'what the f**k!!' But it really has grown on me. It's not great but it isn't bad. And how is it similar to Radiohead?
I've loved Muse forever and I think they deserve credit for experimenting their music genre.
I think the new album is gonna be brilliant, I really can't wait!
Anyone seen the video for it? Very weird but very Muse-ish! xx

Muse will be no more....like KoRn, Metallica, Limp Bizkit.....all those fuckers tend for massive fame. for all the little britney bitches.
I still hope for the best and the piano, it`s killing me.

Its awesome I love it

Man, you fu*@kers are just whining and bi@$*ing about musicians/bands switching it up for a minute....I was actually hoping the rest of the album would be similar and it isn't...I loved Absolution but I can only take so much melodrama. I guess I can understand though, there's so many of you people out there, the ones who always complain when someone deviates from "the formula". It's the same jerks who say "the first album was the best". Everyone's always stuck in their pat little worlds and they don't want anyone to alter that. Must have endless motonous sameness...Good grief, nobody can ever try anything new without getting crap for it. You know what, true fans follow no matter what the destination (literally and musically).

What's wrong that Muse are expirience with theire music? I would be very tired of them if all theire music sound 100% like everything. No, thanks for they doing different sometimes! That makes them fresh. And you who think it's sounds like Britney Spears shuld check your ears.
