New Muse - "Supermassive Black Hole"

So many of you excitedly sent us the new Muse single, without indicating whether you like it or not. Maybe that's because, like Stereogum, you're still undecided. (Or favorite e-mail came from Andrew, who attached the tune and wrote: "I was all like 'what?'")

We hear ya Andrew. Did Max Martin write this?

Muse - "Supermassive Black Hole" (MP3 Link Expired)

Anyone else think this is a bit Radiohead-esque? Especially the pre-chorus bit. And the Myxamatosis intro.

One more vote for undecided, but I'd bet anything it'll be all over the radio for ages...

It kinda sucks. I was really excited and everything, but Franz Ferdinand just do dance rock |-------------------------------------------------| this much better.

Is't Muse pretty open about trying to be Radiohead circa 1998?

Wow - it's like Queens of the Stone age and Spoon's "I turn my camera on"....and yet, not nearly as good as either of them...

I like it. But I like pretty much everything Muse, so.

And, yeah - what mrbenning said. If you're surprised that this sounds like late-90s Radiohead (as if that's a bad thing), you haven't been listening to Muse much lately.

Muse is dead !
This supermASSive black HOLE cannot do any good to Music... Muse's ambition is not enlarging the borders of music nor creating a new sound, but just enlarging the number of people who listen to them, I think...

Drum is not dead.
Listen to those that got something to tell !

I think it's fucking great. But I obviously have a gaping asshole for a mouth so what do I know.

Also, I really like how it says Girly Medium under Ben Gibbards picture.
He is never on my radar but I find that hi-lar-ee-ass.

Finally, I really love this song. I love it so much. I can't stop the liquid shit from pouring from my butt-mouth.

B) I love it anyway.
C) I, having lived under a rock for most of my life, am not actually very familiar with Radiohead and because of all these comparisons, I'm going to go check them out now.

Thank you.

I certainly do like it now. And the robot voice is awesome - pumps out the low-end in the car speakers just like it should. I think this is the most enjoyable single they've released, to be honest.

So they're having fun and not making music for brooding losers to soundtrack their anime videos with anymore. Big loss.

Muse's "SMBH" is a different and interesting branching out for the band. With all the criticism in the past, Matt Bellamy and Muse know what they are doing. Believe me I know from working in a music store and constantly hearing from customers as I play "Origin of Symmetry" or "Absolution" when they say, "Is this the new Radiohead". The general public has no sense of depth perception when it comes to deciphering music. If anything, Muse has advanced and even challenged the pedestal Radiohead has reigned for years. Muse is not Radiohead. Radiohead is not Muse. How can you knock a three piece band that puts out more sound than any band to date. I can honestly say that there is no other band out there that can create a song like "SMBH" and get away with it. Matt definately is giving Prince a run for his money.

this song fucking blows. seriously. and i love muse. i've loved them since i saw them opening for the foo fighters and chili peppers in 1999. i've always been drawn into how their formula is pretty much take a classical piano track and turn it into prog-rock.

this new track is NOT that formula. some bands can get away with trying new stuff, but this just doesn't work for muse. it sounds like they're taking a recent madonna track and doing a bad cover of it. where's the piano? where's the arpeggios? where's the FUCKING RIPPING ROCK GUITAR SOLO that matt bellamy does best?

yawn. i hope the rest of the record isn't like this.

i was a little surprised on first hearing this. i mean- muse have always been about the incredible piano and guitar- but I guess they're just trying something new. I mean- i can't say this song doesnt want to make me dance. I'd get up and dance to it!
I dont really get people who compare them to radiohead. I mean- there might be some similarities, but there's a sort of streak that seperates them.
Ive been a big fan of muse- love their stuff- and im going to get the new album of course.

For those of you who are dissapointed Supermassive Blackhole isn't what the whole album is gonna sound like. I have heard Starlight and it's close to the Muse you guys seem to be hankering for. I think once you get over the initial shock of the scissor sister-ish sound then you'll love it. I love it. It's different. If the song had the same sound as the songs from Absolute then you would all be complaining about that. I love Muse's new song and I know I am going to love the rest of the album. This is not muse taking a step forward, its muse taking a billion trillion steps back... Although the new album is likely to be their most propular, it's also likely to be their worst (although even that is tons better than bands like Franz Ferdinand). One positive note is that Knights of Cydonia holds some hope...

I love the intro to this, then at times he sounds like a cross between justin timberlake, abba, pretty dissapointed with the song really, but june 12 they release a new album so they have 10-11 songs to make up for it, one of the great things about muse is they are quite impossible to copy... specially with that manson custom of his, but i don't think any1 would want to copy this...

I applaud Matt Bellamy for having a go (and a damn good one at that) at something he's always wanted to. His musical horizon is obviously a lot broader than a lot of 'die-hard' anti-electronic rockers, and I think thats ironically awesome considering that Matt Bellamy "borrows" chord sequences from CLASSICAL MUSIC composer Rachmaninov in 'Origin of Symmetry', yet most fail to realise this fact: that Muse is already breaking a lot of 'rules' that most 'rockers' would frown upon.
and MUSE don't sound like Radiohead.... that's a load of bull****... they're music is totally different, their voices just sound a bit similar. LIVE WITH IT

I can't be bothered to quote all the inaccurate generalising quotes regarding what Muse have and should sound like. With regards to structure it's no more/less poppy than the likes of Plug In Baby or Our Time Is Running Out. Sound fuck all like anything recent by Maddona. The beats aren't the standard disco beats endlessly circulating the indie clubs at the moment. No syncopated hi-hats and the like.

So what a band who want to change their style. One would assume a band who can be as overblown and pompous as Muse have a sense of humour about themselves. An ability to enjoy their music.

It's not all about spoonfeeding their fans standard what they've come to expect. It's not all so radically different to a couple of tracks and Absolution. You know the ones.

Why does no-one want bands to grow or change?

Beyond me.
