New My Brightest Diamond - "Inside A Boy"

thubmnail icon: New My Brightest Diamond - "Inside A Boy"

Last time we saw Shara Worden, aka My Brightest Diamond, she was covering Roy Orbison by her lonesome at our SXSW party. She's back with her own material, backed by what sounds like an army of strings, piano twinkles, drums, and windy atmospherics. See, Worden's all set to follow-up her 2006 debut Bring Me The Workhorse with the self-produced A Thousand Shark's Teeth. So far all we've heard is the massive, urgent opening tack "Inside A Boy" -- it's a stunner with a great crunching guitar sound that has us hoping the rest of Shark uses all its teeth.

My Brightest Diamond - "Inside A Boy" (MP3)

What's "Inside A Boy"? A thousand stars. What's inside this girl? One helluva voice.

A Thousand Shark's Teeth is out 6/17 on Asthmatic Kitty.

I can't be the only one who thinks the title is disturbing.

This song is a turd, and the "strings, piano twinkles, drums, and windy atmospherics" can't do anything to polish it. It must be some weird mass delusion that's responsible for this band's popularity. The music is melodramatic and pretentious, and so utterly dull and tepid and phony that I cannot fathom why she's so widely praised on the music blogs. Yes, her voice is technically impressive, but I can think of dozens of musicians who are very skilled and precise with their respective instruments, whether it's guitar or voice or piano or whatever, but they still make schlocky, ridiculous music. Are people so seduced by the sound of her singing voice that they don't hear the overwrought lyrics and VH1-ready compositions? This music is flat-out dumb. Not just this song, but her entire catalog.

shara worden is a woman with incredible amounts of talent. she has an amazing voice and has created a new genre that is un-nameable. to those of you who don't like her music, i respect your decision. but respect the decision of those who do. just because you don't like the way something sounds doesn't mean there's no talent or the music is "dumb". her songs are beautiful yet they're all so different. a thousands shark teeth shows incredible progression from their first album, which was also a beautiful album. personally, i think everyone should go out and get both albums.
