New National Tunes, Peformance On Late Was The Night With Jimmy Fallon

thumbnail icon: New National Tunes, Peformance On Late Was The Night With Jimmy Fallon

Hey, it's a blog post relating to Dark Was The Night. Sunday night's live event around the indie-scene-portrait compilation was a certain success, and the National's final victory lap came last night with a performance of "So Far Around The Bend" for Jimmy Fallon with woodwinds, strings, and a Nico Muhly. We have video of that, but also and more intriguingly, we have NYC Taper-captured MP3s of the two new tunes performed at Radio City this past weekend: the first is the excellently overcast "England," which I had then mentioned has an intro recalling Sufjan's "Concerning The UFO Sighting Near Highland, Illinois" (standing by it) before turning into a The National song, paired with "Vanderlylle Crybaby" which features a smoking guitar-hero solo from the night's MVP, Justin Vernon. Take those, along with the Fallon video and YouTube of Bon Iver and Berninger doing "Big Red Machine" at Radio City:

Here's the Fallon take on "So Far Around The Bend":

And the new tunes from Radio City. The National are at their best when they push to a climax they never fully punctuate, which is why "England" is the National at their best.

The National - "Vanderlylle Cry Baby" (Live W/ Bon Iver) (MP3) [removed at label request]
The National - "England" (Live) (MP3) [removed at label request]

Bon Iver + Berninger = "Big Red Machine":

If I could travel back in time + teleport + somehow score tickets to the Radio City gig, I would have so been there.

has fallon's crew ever heard of a sound check? it sounds like the vox mics are barely on.

The same problem as d, though not Canada, Europe. You would think people would get tired from regionalizing vids, but thankfully no...

So yeah, if anyone happens to notice a video not restricted to one nation, that would be ace.

And anything by The National is just goooooood. Can't wait for the new album, though anyone else afraid they've ditched the rocking and screaming bits altogether?

Not used to hearing the instruments overpower the vocals. It seems that on television performances, it's the other way around. I get so tired of watered down drums.

ya that sound was way off. The drums were so loud and everything else except the acoustic guitar where at a whisper. Why do tv sound guys always forget to sound check.

So the label requested the removal of the fine sounding mp3s, but allowed you to post the Fallon video with a terrible sound mix and the crappy youtube video? Seems ass-backwards. Are they trying to ruin this band's popularity?

i was at the radio city show and when they started playing england, i turned to my friend and said, "this sounds like UFO sightings." it reminded us how much we wanted sufjan to come on. and then he didn't. sad.

anyway, totally agree with you amrit.

We worked out a very reasonable solution with the label and this recording is now back up on nyctaper.com
