New Nine Inch Nails - "Discipline"
Just weeks after unleashing Ghosts to our machines, Trent Reznor delivers another exciting freebie. It's a rock song you will probably like! "Discipline" was released to radio today (how quaint) and will be available for download on nin.com, where Trent has blogged the following...
Some of you may have heard a new Nine Inch Nails track on your radio today. You will be able to download your own copy of the track right here later tonight for free - stop back in a few hours.What else is going on? Hmmn. We're considering a real-time live webcast of me signing 2,500 copies of the just-arrived, super-ultra-mega-deluxe GHOSTS edition all day Thursday. These really turned out great and I can't wait to sign EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM.
We have some tour info coming... SOON (I know you love that word) as well as some other info about something else, too.

I'm glad that Trent is running away with this strategy of releasing new material often, but this song worries me. It seems unfinished, and it doesn't amount to anything. I hope that Year Zero Pt. 2 sounds more finished than this song.
Score = 1
I agree. the songs starts off great, and when you get to bridge you're expecting it to explode, but it returns to the same beat and same riff, then fades out. a lot of the songs on year zero did the same. start off bad ass, then turn into chaotic drum machine samples with distortion.
Score = 2
Oh good, lyrics! I like this.
Score = 5
I don't care who you are, no one looks forward to signing 2,500 of anything. and the song suck, like Metallica Trent has lost the angry depressing fire that made his music good.
Score = -20
I like it.............
Score = 6
I love it. Though there are alot of repetitive lyrics reminiscant of previous albums/songs...and this sounds like something from "With Teeth"...but still, I like it better than Ghosts
Score = 2
I think it's funny that someone compared Trent to Metallica. All of Metallica's songs sound the freakin' same. It's great that Trent is talented enough to create unique sounds and wide variety of emotions in his work. I think the song is great!
Score = 11
Don't have the CD on my right now but will post which track exactly off of Year Zero this is a remake of. The drums, the sample bank used etc...
It is the track that goes... sometimes.. I can see right through mysself.. sometimes I can see right through myself and it does';t really matter anymore no it doesn't really matter anymore. there is no me there is only you there is no fucking me there is only you...
That track.
Score = -9
Firstly, it's from With Teeth. The song is Only, maybe the same sound bank (some, not all), and it's a completely different tempo. Different form....pretty much different everything. Just had to point out that you're a douche....
Score = 7
I'm glad that Trent has stopped writing about all the depressing stuff not cause I don't like it but he's to old to be complaining about everything. At least in my opinion and I really like the song.
Score = 2
dude its only and its not off year zero its from with teeth
Score = 2
so now bands can't use the same drum loops in any songs? as if someone should say "sorry this band used that exact drum loop in this song, no one can ever use it again"
ya'll should remember what john lennon said about music "its all been done"
every song is just one artists take on the idea behind the song, and the influence behind the song. if you start shitting on artists for going back and reusing ideas, people will run out of music to make..
Score = 4
either they will stop making music or take a shotgun to themselves.
Score = 0
This song may not be as good as other NIN material (and I'm basing this on only a few listens...give it time) but I think that's why he's giving it away to. Would a new fan pay for this? Probably not. There's better work to come I'm sure of it, but for now he's given us a taste and told us to mess around with it if we feel so inclined, for that he is the man and is leading the way in new music distribution. (and yes I thought it sounded a bit like Only as well, that's why I can't wait to do a remix and hear other peoples interpretations.)
Score = -1
Whoever said Discipline sounds like Only needs to be punched in the face 8 times, because it sounds NOTHING like Only, AND Only is on With Teeth, not Year Zero.
That being said, I think I really like the new single. It doesn't sound like anything off of With Teeth, whoever said that. i didn't really like With Teeth (withuhhh teethuhhhh) but I really like this new song.
Go Trent, it's great that you can keep making music after you've gotten sober. And you STILL fucking ROCK. <3
Score = 4
This song reminds me a lot of Soul Coughing - lyrically, rhythmically and even in the sound of the drums there's a lot of similarity...I don't know if anyone knows of Soul Coughing, and people might disagree but then this is the net so no surprises there. Anyway just thought I'd throw that in...
Score = 1
i'm gonna add to this stupid debate. it aint TDS, The Fragile, With Teeth or Year Zero. it's a delicious piece of funky, dancey, POPPY, rock. his tune is about 'taking your shirt off', dancing drunkenly around your living room with your mates and singing along. it aint some heavy angry metal from a drugg addicted 26 year old. so get over it it and love that BEAT!!
Score = 2
You're probably right Jac, that's "a delicious piece of funky, dancey, POPPY, rock" designed for some 26 year old Coke/MTV addict. That may be the next soundtrack for a movie with Sarah Michele Jelar or something.
That's simply not NIN.
This guy fought for years for his freedom, against drugs, sex addiction, mainstream medias, formatted culture, and he suffured ans what he produced at this time was beautifull.
And here is what he does when he finally wins.
That's just sad. I keep hoping that's just like a B-side...
Score = -5
I'm not too familiar with With Teeth or The Fragile, but I LOVE Ghosts.
Even if it is a 'rehashed' beat, or 'poppy', I'm totally digging the sound of those drums.
Score = 1
The opening and intonation sound very similar to "The Hand that Feeds". I bet the two would mashup just fine. I like the sparse-yet-welcome piano melody and chording a lot. I also really dig the part where Reznor goes "Oohohhohhhh".
Score = 1
Why does everyone have to complain when when the music isn't what they expect or want? What the fuck... I've heard a lot of people complain how Reznor's style of singing and music has changed. He has been screaming his head off for like 19 years...that shit will take a toll on you... Anyway, this is a free track...take it or leave it. By the way a lot of people have shit on The Fragile, everyone can fuck off because that album is genius.

Wow all of this talk disowning NIN and the whole band for something they created for their own reasons is really immature. Trent is not the only member of the band, you know. He is. in himself, a very talented person, but I hate how people single him out from the rest of his band. I'd be pretty sure he wouldn't like it either. If I know anything about NIN, I could easily say they don't care what you think about their music, and they're going to keep on jamming until they can't jam anymore.
Of course this doesn't sound like older material, and it never will again, because THAT WAS THE PAST. This is the present, and this is the future, so don't expect them to keep making the same music that they did when they first started making it.
These guys are very diverse in their musical creation, and that is very unique and distinguishing from other bands. No other band could ever dream of being as talented and impeccable as they are. Just because you liked the past, doesn't mean it's going to be present in the future, so you'd best adapt before you're lost in time.
And for the people not satisfied with the new single, again I'll say, this is more than likely only a beta, and it can't be expected to be a masterpiece yet. It becomes complete and astonishing when the album releases. Don't focus on a flower, embrace the garden around it.

Need some more music while you wait till May 5th for the next Nine Inch Nails release? You might be interested in the album I just finished this month. It is political, subversive post-industrial rock with an interesting mix of classical instruments, guitars, electronic beats, and a small dash of aussie hip-hop. Download the whole album for free at our website http://www.politicsapocalypse.com
I don’t mean to spam but I am trying to get the word out to those who may enjoy the music.

Hi Politics Apocalypse.
I downloaded your album and am listening to it right now. I like!
Leaving you some comments on your guest book.
Score = 2
Thanks for checking it out Laurence, and thanks for the email review of the album, it is great to get in-depth feedback. We released the album this month and have had over 1000 downloads! To celebrate, if you pre-order a cd this April (at cost price plus any donation) I'll throw in some extra disks of other projects I've been involved in. Only 2 days left!
IMHO Discipline does sound With_Teeth-ish because it is more of a pop-rock thing than the cool-craziness of YZ, with the slight repetitiveness of the WT songs. Either way I love the new song and cant wait till May 5th.

And who the f**k are you to decide if a talk is immature or useless or whatever? I do respect others' opinions and that's why I dare to write mine here.
I am a big NIN addict. I discovered them with TDS in 1994, think The Fragile is a masterpiece of music, I finally suceeded in listening With Teeth as it comes (west coast?), I still have to listen Year Zero a thousand times because THAT IS NEW and creative.
Everytime we compare current works to previous ones you'll find someone to say "that was then, now this is". But I never looked back saying it was better before, because I always expected something new from NIN. AND THAT'S PRECISELY WHY I DON'T LIKE THIS TRACK.
Nothing new compared to Only or The Hand That Feeds, even the new fans can say that, nothing new compared to regular indie pop-rock your can hear everywhere. That's is definitely not the future.
Don't you need to be surprised when you discover something new, John ?

Wow, you're reply made no sense really. If you have any intelligence in a basic reading skill at all, you would have known exactly what I was saying. Did you even read what I said, or did you just reply to what you think I said?
Score = 0
Mmmmm. Speaking about useless answers, thanks for yours. I am pretty sure I understood exactly what you meant : "Wow all of this talk disowning NIN and the whole band for something they created for their own reasons is really immature"
I did not mean to offense you, sorry about writting 'f**k' :), but don't read and post comments is you think others' opinions and talk are immature.
Anyway I'm still happy that a simple piece of music can trigger so many discussions and even fights, it proves we don't simply eat what we're given on MTV or radios.

god...NIN is so awful
Score = -4
so, his music sounds happier? Well, thats probably because he is. Dont like the new song? Think it sounds to "poppish"? Then go listen to another album of his. I think the song is great, sounds nothing like "only" off of With Teeth, and describes how he feels right now. Besides, he gave it too u for free, what the hell are you complaining about? I think trent is the last person to go screw his fans personally. When he puts out Yr. Zero 2,
I think the music will be more in depth trust me...
In the mean time though....the song still has a sexy meaning in my opinion.
Excuse me while I take my shirt off and dance to it.
rock on trent. your music will always be spectacular.
Score = 1
to the person that said Trent isn't the only one in the band: nine inch nails is Trent reznor. The band helps work on shit and tours but nin has always been Trent reznor. Do u really know what your talking about? No!
Score = 1
I did tell you that I didn't have the CD's on me at the moment an mucked the album and the track up. So yeah you are all bigger NIN fans than me... that's what I was here to prove and you helped me..... because anytime a NIN discussion comes up you have hordes or people fighting to prove who is the bigger fan. But don't tell me that you don't hear similar banks being used.
Seriously, my late night observation was in no way a criticism. I've been a fan of NIN and will remain a fan of NIN for years to come.

this is sooooooooooooo borrrring... GEEZUS PLEASE GET YOUR BALLS BACK TRENT!

This song is pretty basic / sounds like some of their other stuff - but the way it is different and that it is a painting a picture a little differently - kinda similar to how simple Closer was, but with the video... it was something completely different. This reminds me more of something we might have seen off A Downward Spiral than anything else, though the track is obviously a bit lighter in nature than something we would have seen then. This track is a builder... into what, we don't know yet. Proggy!
