New Os Mutantes - "Teclar"

thubmnail icon: New Os Mutantes - "Teclar"

The classic Brazilian crew Os Mutantes are gearing up to release Haih, their first album in 35 years. If they're feeling any pressure about it, the laid-back lead track "Teclar" doesn't give any such indication. The sunny nugget opens with dramatic, almost ominous castanets (typing?), but quickly flows into a pastoral, plucked, sawed, and chimed psychedelic excursion with Sergio Dias Baptista's breezy vocals joined by syrupy group harmonies. (Here/there, you wouldn't be wrong to leave with images of the Incredible String Band dancing in your head.) It's a nice blend of their vintage sound and a few new tricks.

Os Mutanates are one of those weird, obscure bands I started listening to just to get another indie badge on my olive colored, boy scout jacket of music snobbery. What's Beefheart up to these days?

Clearly not one of "those" reunions but the other kind...

mutantes crew are NOT gearing up. i know that the band have a fantastic history and discography. but you should know that this "mutantes" of today are a complete joke. the main figures and geniuses rita lee and arnaldo baptista left the group decades ago. guitarist sergio dias tried to ressurect the band with another brazilian singer, zelia duncan, and she quitted a few months later. then he desperately got this wannabe american idol freak person and named it "os mutantes". come on, look at this shameful photo. and listen to the song.

ok, long comment. but a fair warning, i hope.

Yeah, so KJK how's your Portuguese these days? Or, in whatever your second language is (if you have one; guessing not) would YOU assume that the present and past tense for a word would be identical? Not every language works like English. Way to be American.

Teclar = To Type

and this music (and the other one we've previously heard) are quite boring. The lyrics are awful and the singing ain't great. I could do without Rita, but not without Arnaldo. That's a shame, but i'm still a huge Os Mutantes fan.
