New Paul Westerberg - "Love You In The Fall"
Are you guys gonna go see Open Season this Friday? It's a new animated movie about a domesticated grizzly bear who befriends a mule deer. No? What if I told you Martin Lawrence does the bear's voice?
OK, yeah, you're not the target demo. But Paul Westerberg provides the soundtrack. How did this pairing come about? (Via MySpace)
PAUL WESTERBERG: "My music was being pitched to various studios at the time. The very last one we went to was Sony. I played a few of my songs and was told: 'We've got this bear movie coming up. Do you wanna do a bear movie?' And I said, 'Sure, I can do that.'"And the 'Mat went and wrote a song called "Right To Arm Bears." (Har Har.) Haven't heard that one. But this other movie tune is some good rollicking jangle pop for your autumn iMix. Lately, all Paul's songs are starting to sound like siblings of "Waiting For Somebody." No complaints.

Fun fact via IMDB: Ashton Kutcher (the mule deer) and Martin Lawrence never met during the making of the film.

Haven't seen the flick, but I'd watch any feature-length film in Imax 3D. Even "The Ant Bully" was a trip in that format!
The Westerberg songs are a nice bonus though.

It makes my head hurt that our Sir Paul is doing gimmick movies (um, Singles doesn't count! Really!). And you're dead on, Scott--this is a wonderful '93 reprise, with a bang-up Westerberg riff.

The man has to pay the bills. He's certainly not going to be raking it in off The Mats back catalog. The bonus of all this is that he plays with Tommy on a couple of songs. They also got together to play the premiere the other night. They played two songs off the soundtrack and then closed with IOU. All reports said that they sounded great.

For me when it comes to Paul, he can do whatever he wants, even if it sucks, because he IS, WAS, & ALWAYS WILL BE, The Man!

I don't plan to see it, but after listening to the soundtrack, I may have to. If anything to try to put these songs in context--which I can't help but do anyway. The Talking Head's "Wild Wild Life" is pretty useless, but I guess Sony needed one familiar (if horribly outdated) song on the record.

I think Paul's really into the fact that he's a dad right now. Whenever he interviewed about Don't You Know Who I Think I Was, he'd talk about coaching his son's Little League team. I wouldn't be surprised if he thought it would sort of impress his son or something.

First off, why is it so odd to do a cartoon soundtrack? Have you listened to the PowerPuff Girls soundtrack (mix it with DangerDoom) or select tracks off of SpongeBob? It can be pretty great.
As for Paul's "Open Season," he sounds great, like he's having a lot of fun. Think of it as his Jonathan Richman album. The lyrics aren't always there, but the energy is and for once he doesn't sound like he's trying to convince anyone - himself, the fans or the suits.
"Love you in the fall," "Any better than this," and the Paul version of "Wild as I wanna be" (available on vinyl or iToons) are pretty great and need no qualifications.
And, as Paul sang the other night, "I owe you nothing." That goes for fans as well as the suits.

Paul can do no wrong as long as Paul plays that guitar...in his basement for no one or in the theater for kids...its all a blessing.

Love this site, it's going in my Favorites.
As for Paul, (the best lyricist/musician of this century IMO) he can do whatever he wants. As long as he shares with us. This soundtrack is way cool.
