New Phoenix - "1901"

thumbnail icon: New Phoenix - "1901"

It's not an outright club cut, and the guitars aren't absent to a Zinner-degree, but still: lots of synths to this new Phoenix. "1901" is the lead leak from the Parisian pop-minded rockers' forthcoming fourth LP Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix. They're an album-oriented band, each great with little by way of filler, but also they're unafraid to cast their style-net widely within each tracklist. (I.e. this is the band that put "Too Young" and "Funky Squaredance" on the same record). So "1901" isn't necessarily suggestive of the rock of Amadeus, not that there would be anything wrong with that: It's still Thomas Mars coolly killing a hook, and it's still a bright, upbeat, and pulsing Phoenix rock cut. Take the hook of "Long Distance Call" and work some keyboard tones dialed to French electrohouse into the mix. Or just listen to "1901."

It's logical growth, really; guitarist Laurent Brancowitz was in a band with Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo aka Daft Punk once upon a day. Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix is out soon on 5/25 worldwide. Until then, there's Twitter.

Anyone else confuse the vocals for that of Kevin Barnes, of of Montreal?

Phoenix are like a French equivalent to Death Cab for Cutie. I don't mean that in a pejorative sense at all, it just suits where their sound is now.

Fuck. I love Phoenix, but this is a mess. Songs like "One Time Too Many" and "If I Ever Feel Better" are great because they sound so effortless. This sounds like it's trying to hard.

Love phoenix and at first listen i'm like "cool".I'm pretty sure I'll be in love with it after the 4th time I hear it.

This song is classic Phoenix. It's got that dude singing, that other dude playing guitar, a title that is historically significant. The french know how to do easy listening rock and roll.

New Phoenix, Grizzly Bear, and Animal Collective. Best year ever?

I loved Phoenix's third album, and seems like they are keeping some semblance of that 3rd album sound, which was a great improvement over their first two albums. Single didn't knock my socks off but I did enjoy it and shows promise for the album. 2009 is shaping up to be what could be the best year since 2006 for music (in my opinion, a top notch year). Already we have AC Newman, Andrew Bird, Swan Lake, Beirut, The Decemberists, Phoenix, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Franz Ferdinand, Whitest Boy Alive, Bishop Allen (surprisingly amazing), and The great Dark was the Night compilation. Did I mention its only February? yea, 2009 rocks.

I agree with all who said they really dig this song, especially the fellow who thought this cut seems to pick up where the most recent album left off. Not only do I agree, but I'm very pleased to say it! Phoenix is just great. I hope the whole album is as excellent as these two fine songs.

I love this song. I hadn't heard of Phoenix before I heard this, so I'm still discovering their older material, but this song is really fun to listen to.

This is the first time I have ever heard of this group...I think. I love this song though and I am officially a fan of theirs now.

Thank you for being a good band.
