New Raveonettes - "Last Dance"

thubmnail icon: New Raveonettes - "Last Dance"

Sonically, the Raveonettes forthcoming fourth album In And Out Of Control reminds me of Jesus & Mary Chain, Phil Spector, and Magnetic Fields' Distortion in equal measure. (As far as the darkly cheeky lyrics go, it's pure Merritt.) You can draw your own comparisons from the cathartic sock-hopping "Suicide" as well as the provocatively titled "Boys Who Rape (Should All Be Destroyed)" in demo form. You maybe have also heard the nostalgic "Last Dance" -- which transforms a sugary prom theme into an equally poppy tale of addiction and overdosing -- when it was still in progress. Now we can offer up the final take. No pun there.

Every track I have heard, whether it be a demo or a snippet, has sounded amazing! I cannot wait for the entire album to come out!

What a wonderful song, bit heavy on the corn syrup but sometimes i like it like that.

the demo was way better - why the fuck did they cheese up the production and vocals?

For an act with such vanity in matters of originality and distinction, "Last Dance" carries the same title as every other album-concluding, pensively-aft-gazing track - and moreover, the juxtaposition of young revelry and drug depravity, a veritable motif in indie pop of a blacker bent, is even less genre-defying. The Raveonettes are meant to be a remarkable band; I firmly believe this. However, with every new album they've become all the more ordinary. I suppose things seem novel until they're repeated ad nauseum.
