New Roddy Woomble - "My Secret Is My Silence"

Roddy Woomble, a.k.a. the best named frontman in rock, is better known as the lead singer of Scottish rockers Idlewild, and after listening (and returning) to his solo debut all week, we're convinced he's gonna see a legion of new devotees to the church of Woomble. This album is that good. Roddy takes a step away from the indie-punk/post-hardcore/arena-rock of his day job and fully immerses himself in the tradition of lilting, Scottish folk, infusing his terse, pithy verse into elegant melodies. Here's a taste of the title track, in which Roddy sings of his motherland: "I'm sick of living in these buildings that were built in blood and rain/But from the warm side of the window, the view's always looked the same." And earlier he says "your sadness tastes like whiskey" -- which is the most delicious sort of sadness, we say. Lovely stuff. Or as one UK reviewer said, it's "folking brilliant."

Roddy Woomble - "My Secret Is My Silence" (MP3)

Won't be disappointed with this one. My Secret Is My Silence is out July 10th in the US on 7-10 Music.

I got this album last year and actually think it's kind of crappy. It's like the boring moments of Idlewild (which are very few) magnified times 1000. Very forgettable stuff, in my opinion.

It seems nice and all, but not really interesting to me. Does it help to know Idlewild at all to dig this?

Maybe I just like my folk with less lilt. Crazy-ass name, though, so props to him for that.

god, this record is so amazing. something makes me think the "boring moments" referred to in the first comment are actually my favorite idlewild moments.

i have been recommending this record to everyone i know for months.

Great to see Idlewild/Woomble mentioned on Stereogum.

I found this record a bit disappointing and I'm a HUGE Idlewild fan. But it's still far better than most things out there.

The new Idlewild record is, however, really great.

Roddy Woomble! OH! Thank you one of my favorite records from 2006, i really appreaciated yourrrrr idea on making such a great post devotes itself to great music. I can't believe that someone says "Very forgettable stuff" on the first comment, are you serious? or you're only about to give a shit to Paris Hilton news!!! This is amazing stuff lyrically and musically. But poor people! Whenever a wonderful music pass near by them, they can't even smile to it! How a pitty, the world nearly becomes land of the id-i-ot-s who can't listen, talk or think only for a moment.
