New Saturday Knights - "Dog Park"

thubmnail icon: New Saturday Knights - "Dog Park"

Amrit spends a lot of time at the dog park, so he might be better able to unpack the romantic (and chain) entanglements (and list of designer puppy breeds) in the Saturday Knights "Dog Park," but sonically, the Seattle hip-hoppers mix shimmery Spaceman 3 distorted background pulses and tambourines with overlapping vocal harmonies, both rap and sung, and various dog references (whistles, "come here, girl," etc). It's a fun summertime track from the trio of Tilson, Barfly, and DJ Suspence's Mingle, out in June on Light In The Attic, the Seattle label most recently remembered for the Black Angels, Karen Dalton, Betty Davis, Os Mutantes, etc. That's what one would commonly call "eclectic."

The Saturday Knights - "Dog Park" (MP3)

You can hear another Mingle track, "45," at their MySpace. And, speaking of mingling, the album includes various guests, including the Dap Kings, Soundgarden's Kim Thayil, Jack Endino, and Jim Horn, who played on Pet Sounds and the Shaft soundtrack. The band has some Seattle dates with RZA and Budos Band, also listed at MySpace.

Mingle is out 6/24 on Light In The Attic.

Reminds me of what Ann and Nancy Wilson (of spleen fame) used to say about KJET...."We don't like it - makes me all nervous and jittery"

Quit Your Day Job: Ungdomskulen

The Bergen trio Ungdomskulen play proggy post punk, mixing chops and hooks with a sense of humor. But they don't sound like Primus. When I was in Norway a couple years ago, "Ungdomskulen" seemed to be on everybody's lips (or...

Premature Evaluation: Beck - Modern Guilt

It's been some time since we learned Modern Guilt, Beck Hansen's eighth album, would be some sort of psych rock minimalist '60s trip with Danger Mouse. Since then, we've gotten a look at the old-school jazz/Blue Note-style cover art and...
