New Shearwater - "Leviathan, Bound"

thubmnail icon: New Shearwater - "Leviathan, Bound"

So far Rook's standout track is "Rooks," which mixes ex-Okkervil Riverer Jonathan Meiburg's melancholic, bookish tendencies into a tight, elegant nugget. "Leviathan, Bound," which follows "Rooks" on the album, also follows in the general stylistic path as its predecessor, though it's more fragile, less robust, and lacks as strong an initial hook. Give it time, though, figure out the hunter/hunted vignette/storyline, let the strings and glock do their thing, and you'll discover the tug.

Shearwater - "Leviathan, Bound" (MP3)

It works best in the context of the album (think about "The Hunter's Star" at some point), which you can stream at Shearwater's MySpace.

Rook is out via Matador.

totally agreed. the guitar line on "rooks" is one of the best of the year. "leviathan, bound" took a while for me to get into, but it's pretty great, as well.

Another good song from Rook. It's a great year when we get a spectacular Shearwater album in the summer, and then (possibly album of the year) Okkervil River's The Stand Ins in the fall!

LOVE this album - so far my favorite is "The Snow Leopard" though.

Very very good album...anybody notice, though, how similar "The Snow Leopard" (especially the end) is to "Pyramid Song" from Amnesiac?? It's not like it sort of sounds like it....it really sounds like it!!

OMG YES, I noticed the "Pyramid Song" resemblance IMMEDIATELY but I thought I was going crazy! Maybe it has something to do with a piano key shift from major to minor (disclaimer, i don't know much about music)? Regardless, I love "The Snow Leopard" a lot; might be my favorite on the album, even.

p.s. Brandon, what on earth is "let the strings and glock do their thing, and you'll discovered the tug" supposed to mean!? not being sarcastic, I honestly would like to know what you meant.

he means if you listen to the strings and glockenspiel long enough, even if you aren't initially into the song, they'll pull you in.

Thanks, Spud, that's indeed what I meant, more or less. Hmm, it should be "discover," though, and not "discovered." I'll fix that typo now. Maybe now it'll make more sense!

This album is one of 2008's true gems. Although I did very much enjoy Palo Santo, this release took me somewhat by surprise. I am totally excited to see them when they play with Frog Eyes and Evangelicals this summer.
