New Silversun Pickups - "Panic Switch"
![]()
Our last Silversun Pickups post had a Joaquin Phoenix directorial credit attached to it. This was before he embarrassed himself on Letterman. The Los Angeles band's "Panic Switch" appears to be Phoenix free, but frontman Brian Aubert's androgynous vocals (and overall vocal harmonies) remain Breeders-esque, and the band's sound '90s alternative. Because some things don't change. The track's from the Pickups' forthcoming second album Swoon. Like their debut, it was produced by Dave Cooley.
Swoon is out 4/13 via Dangerbird.

First record was a guilty pleasure of mine....this kind of meanders until this big bridge/chorus thing at the end...
eh.
Not sure if i'll steal this record.
Score = -20
They're debut full-length had some really good singles but a lot of snoozers as well. This kind of sounds like it could've been on that album or a b-side. Here's hoping the rest of the album has more to offer because I really want to like these guys.
Score = 2
silversun hiccups. yawn
Score = -27
their first record was great. i don't see how anyone would find it to be a guilty pleasure. just b/c pfork gives an album a poor review shouldn't make it a guilty pleasure.
Score = 34
When will some people stop assuming that everyone on these comments base their opinions off of a Pitchfork review?
Here's something to ponder: Sometimes Pitchfork gives an album a medicore or bad review and it's easy to see why. Sometimes it's not. In short, Pitchfork isn't always the devil.
If you ask me, if at this point in the musical criticism game you can't be open to both welcoming what Pitchfork writes while forming your own opinion, maybe don't bother making an opinion altogether.
Score = 12
but let's be honest, man: usually pitchfork is just wrong
Score = 18
but the devil always has a pitchfork- (budum bshh)
Score = 14
some really catchy melodies and definitely awesome energy on SOME cuts (great sense of urgency)
But i felt guilty because it was a completely re-hashed- copied sound and the lyrics didn't do anything for me... so gushing over some of these tunes produced that feeling. Like eating too much chocolate ... no nutritional value,but tastes good.
Now I feel guilty because I mentioned Pitchfork on Stereogum's awesome website. Sorry Gum.

Fatiguing . . .
Score = -3
not too big on this song, but i feel like Carnavas was a good enough 90s alternative style album that if it were released as the Smashing Pumpkins "reunion" album people wouldn't be shitting on Billy Corgan the way they deservingly are now.
oh, and it would also help if Billy weren't such a douche.
Score = 5
I don't think anyone is denying what you're saying, but to pretend that there aren't people out there who snobbishly turn a music group down just because of a Pitchfork review is to ignore what's right in front of your nose. The Emperor's New Clothes is only part fiction.
Score = 9
I agree with you on that. It's unfortunate to hear about or see. On one side of the coin its good someone out there is guiding people towards music they'd otherwise might never find out about but on the otherside its troubling when every "Best New Music" artist's show suddenly sells out or their album climbs to #1 on Insound.
To all the kids who read hard into the P4K, use it as a guide not gospel.
Score = 7
Amen.
Score = 1
Well, I really like the first album and really like this track...their music has a sense of urgency and momentum that is missing from a lot of today's 'indie-pop' bands.
Score = 6
enough with pitchfork talk, this is stereogum lol. anyways i dig the song, it got my attention
Score = 5
Absolutely great! It's like the pacing of Well Thought Out Twinkles, but better. I cannot wait for April 14th!
Score = 5
I realllly like this.
Score = 6
Everyone either kinda/sorta or complete and totally liked "Lazy Eye". It was a good song.
Score = 10
Great song - fuck all of you assholes.
Score = 5
Great song - I fuck assholes
Score = 10
Liked it more than the two Yeah Yeah Yeah tracks that came out.
Score = 7
This song sounds like a more furious version of the non-singles of Carnavas. Me likey.
Score = 4
this really is'nt bad!
Score = 3
Carnavas was a great album, and this is a pretty decent song. I think its safe to say that swoon is going to be a good album, i cant wait till it comes out.
Score = 4
I'm totally addicted to this song. I can't explain why but i am, its just a feel good energetic rock song to me. And in the end, isn't that what music is all about?
Score = 4
I come here for special music but not this pop crap
Score = -18
Get a life.
Score = 7
I like this song (very much), but I can't see this getting SSPU any cred in the indie scene. It's even more mainstream-ish than anything on Carnavas, and that barely passed on P-fork.
Score = 3
Even if it's more of the same (which I don't really agree with) I'd be fine with that because Carnavas was awesome.
Score = 3
I'm a sucker for this dudes voice. I'll check up on their new album when released.
Score = 6
I was a sucker when I saw one of their videos for the first time! This chick is a DUDE! I love him, love them all.
Score = 0
This song is addicting, very energetic and dreamy. I don't understand why the hate though, you can't expect every band to do what you like, they do what they want and these dudes do with passion, no doubt. This album is going to be as great as Carnavas, I feel it. If you didn't like SSPU in the beginning stop forcing yourself to like them or go listen to something else you like.
PS: Pitchfork has no idea what their talking about. Ever.
Score = 4
This is so Nostalgic of the yesteryears, where people Jammed, nothing cliche abou the music or worn down from the music biz. Sounds like fresh air, great single, now great expectations. Visuals Please.
Score = 1
i refuse to feel guilty about anything pleasurable...if the persona you've created for yourself does not permit you to enjoy something that makes you feel good, it's time to ditch the persona. this song makes me want to jump around the apartment naked. in fact, i'm going to do that right now.
here i go!
Score = 0
Awesome song, I'm really looking forward to the new album. SSPU are a great band, it sucks to see the people who praised them before they were successful dumping on them now. I really hate that about the indie rock scene.
Score = 2
in a sea of shit, this is the lifeboat.
Score = 1
How can this be classified as pop?!? This song is a huge orgasismic explosion of sex, rock, and fury!
Score = 1
I think if Smashing Pumpkins and Sparta made a hip love child, it would be the Silversun Pickups... ?
Score = 1
I LOVE SSPUs because they groove so well. In my head they can't go wrong
