New Smith Westerns - "Girl In Love"

On their MySpace page glammy Chicago garage-pop quartet Smith Westerns list their influences as "Girls Girls Girls." They have a couple of songs about boys, but I get what they mean, sure. (Also, whether an intentional reference or not, they do nail a similar vibe as the San Francisco duo of the same name.) Otherwise, they're not being forthcoming enough by leaving Garry Glitter off the list. See, for instance, "Girl In Love" from their self-titled debut: It might make you think about "Leader Of The Gang" and/or "Rock And Roll." You'll likely hear T Rex's "Jeepster," too. Influence unpacking aside -- it's fun stuff regardless -- find Nirvana in the album art.

"Girl In Love" has got that fun T. Rex shuffle going on, but "Be My Girl" is one of the best songs of the year. Really good, underrated album.

i dont think anyone is underrating this album. on lots of peoples "top whatever" lists. that said, i fucking love this album, saw them @ webster hall and they slayed, cant wait fr them to come back and play some smaller venues.

Wait. M. Ward did this same thing earlier this year, only without the vocals that sound pulled out of a Rentals demo tape. In fact the intro to this song is identical to "Never Had Nobody Like You". Yet everyone is saying M.Ward is an old man this year, and The Smith Westerns are being lauded as the second coming of musical salvation.

Just an observation.
