New Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin - "Think I Wanna Die"

The young masters of bedsit indie pop Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, who landed a sweet slot in our three-day SXSW fiesta (between Kaki King and Letterman-beloved Liam Finn), offer up another track to remind you that the repeat-worthy Pershing drops just a few weeks after we all get back from Austin. The last cut "Glue Girls" gave us some shifty grooved power pop, "Think I Wanna Die" brings it back to their Brooming fresh-scrubbed and bright eyed sweet '60s stuff: you know that time, when songs started on the hook and boys followed lines like "Think I wanna die if you don't stay / Drop dead in place you can forget it / Carry a torch for days I'm gonna let it burn" with melodic doo-doo-doos ... and it all sounded sincere and real and made you feel like finding a gal to go steady with and take to the drive in.

The kids can write a pop song. Pershing is out 4/8 on Polyvinyl. Catch 'em at South By, or at a bunch of cities thereafter (some with the excellent bay area ramshackle rockers Port O'Brien).

new album barely nicks YR BROOM in terms of beauty. While I'd give their debut a B+, Pershing gets a C. Still better than majority of stuff that's surfacing.

Wow, I highly disagree, Steve. Pershing is MUCH better than Broom.. and I LOVE Broom.

"Dead Right" alone beats all of Broom.

This is my favorite album in some time, these guys can't get enough attention. Can't believe my MO boys aren't coming to Kansas City, though.

Quit Your Day Job: Ungdomskulen

The Bergen trio Ungdomskulen play proggy post punk, mixing chops and hooks with a sense of humor. But they don't sound like Primus. When I was in Norway a couple years ago, "Ungdomskulen" seemed to be on everybody's lips (or...

Premature Evaluation: Beck - Modern Guilt

It's been some time since we learned Modern Guilt, Beck Hansen's eighth album, would be some sort of psych rock minimalist '60s trip with Danger Mouse. Since then, we've gotten a look at the old-school jazz/Blue Note-style cover art and...
