I don't know how they do it, but Sonic Youth just keep getting better and better.

Great song - can't wait for the album.

Psyched for the new album, but embarrassed that I will soon have an episode of GG on my DVR.

Re: not liking one since Murray Street - I don't understand how anyone can not like the song 'Unmade Bed' from Sonic Nurse. It is one of the most beautiful pieces they have ever produced, IMHO.

i think it's funny that everyone here rips on bands like pearl jam and the RHCP citing that they're 'no longer relevant' or 'so 95' or whatever, but no one has a bad word to say about veterans like sonic youth. i'm aware the both PJ and the RHCP are beyond irrelevant at this point, but so is sonic youth. come on... it's a double standard if i've ever seen one. the song is boring. boring boring boringboring.

first off, pearl jam is amazing. Nuff said.

Sonic youth is pretty damn good as well. And both bands are touring together this summer...the irrelvant tour.

The only ones who care about "relevance" are the little hipster idiots with their scorecards and notebooks who refuse to listen to anything with a 6 or lower rating from Pitchfork. Listen to what you like - who gives a fuck, anyway?

well apparently you give a fuck, jimmy. jimmy has a compound fracture!

but i do agree with your 'listen to what you like' approach. i just thinks it unfair that people judge bands like PJ and RHCP differently than bands like SY. anything said about RHCP could apply to SY, yet no one seems to distribute those comments equally. whatever, they all suck now.

you like what you like, and what is relevant is what YOU think is relevant. who cares if a mindless internet dolt thinks something is past its prime? if you're making your listening decisions based on what others think, you're a moron. and if you let it bother you that someone trashes a band you love, you're a fool and a moron.

that said, pearl jam has always sucked. if i want to hear mr. ed sing i'll buy one of those albums he released when his hit show was on the air. the chili peppers have pretty much always sucked too, but i did like them a bit in high school, particularly uplift mofo and the abbey road ep, but i probably haven't listened to either record since 9th grade and listened to a lot of other bad music in high school so that is no endorsement.

the new sonic youth record is pretty damn good throughout. the first track starts off with a strange grateful dead riff, and it's a little heavy on the kim vocals (always preferred thurston singing myself) but all told it's as strong if not stronger than anything they've put out since washing machine.

both of you guys are morons...pearl jam sucks? did you buy the new album? did you listen to it? Did you write a review i can read?

two morons who like to type a lot, that's what you guys are.

"and if you let it bother you that someone trashes a band you love, you're a fool and a moron."

i hate peral jam. they suck so hard. eddie vedder can't sing. they're boring and old and fat. ed wishes he was neil young, it's so pathetic. an avocado? retards.

im not bothered that you're trashing the band. I'm bothered that your moronic views are polluting this board as well as a fine sonic youth post.

But Axl Foley will move on with his life and enjoy the new Pearl Jam record and the new one from the peppers, as well as Sonic youth's new song!

Axl can't be stopped.

i've heard enough pearl jam in my life that i feel justified in my determination that "they suck". no doubt they appeal to some folks, as they sell plenty of records, but that doesn't change my opinion of the band. if what they played on SNL was from the new album, then i've heard just about enough of it.

that's all an aside though - the new sonic youth is worth checking out. if you're a fan, you probably won't be disappointed. the second track, whose name escapes me, is especially stellar.

Sonic Youth is the best fuckin' band on earth! Pearl Jam sucked since Ten, so they can never compare. They are not even in the same league. RHCP lost their sound after Blood Sugar Sex Magik. Its all downhill from there, but Sonic Youth has made quality records throughout their entire career. The new SY record is great, best thing since Washing Machine. My only complaint is that Lee only sings one song. He needed more, because his song is by far the best on the album. Sonic Youth are LEGENDS, Pearl Jam is just a footnote.

Lee's songs are always a highlight for me.

come on, it's hip to hate on old rock bands like Pearl Jam, but Sonic Youth is still "in", probably because they are a cool "new york indie band" reference for bands and hipsters to cite these days. Is Sonic Youth still any good? I dont know, I always thought they were a bit overhyped, but I liked most of what I heard from them. I actually bought "Goo" when it first came out, I cant pretend to have done so for "Daydream Nation", I was still listening to Slayer and Metallica. How old were you when Goo came out? How old were you when you bought it?

My first Sonic Youth CD was Daydream Nation, I was almost 13. After that I proceeded to buy every new album that has come out since. After quickly picking up their back catalog. When Goo came out I was 14 or 15 and I played it to death, like I did all their other records. Daydream Nation and Sister are still, in my mind, the 2 best records EVER. I've always loved SY, even when NYC Ghosts & Flowers sucked. They are still my favorite band.

And Lee's songs were always the highlight for me too, especially in the later years (Washing Machine to now). His songs are usually the best on those records.

my opinion of the song -- sounds like every other sy song.

I can't believe people are even attempting to try and compare PJ & RHCP to SY!?!! They cannot be compared because the two latter bands have been lame un-progressive frat-favourite music to drink budweiser too their enitire careers! SY on the other hand are constantly evolving while continuing to make meaningful, playful, beautiful art-rock. it's like comparing a hallmark birthday card to a duchamp!

i have to agree with wigggly. i think it's pretty ridiculous to say sonic youth are irrelevant. what about curating all tomorrow's parties, what about murray street and its 9/11 connection, the noise fests, the syr albums? i mean, pearl jam basically lost any relevance they had after lollapalooza ended. so did red hot chili peppers but they were lucky that enough frat boys were still discovering their music, thus woodstock 1999.

or we could evaluate these bands based on their cover art choices. you won't see sonic youth making mistakes like pearl jam and red hot chili peppers. i mean, if the cover art isn't original, unique and thoughtful do you think the music inside will be?

to answer tylernol, i was in 8th grade when goo came out and i bought it then.
