New South - "Shallow"
How many post-punk acts can a band imitate in a single song? South try for at least five on this cut off the forthcoming Adventures In The Underground Journey To The Stars. I like it, but the rip-off (albeit sped up) from Talking Heads' "This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)" is so blatant it's funny.
South - "Shallow" (MP3 Link Expired)
Won't be DJing that tonight. But come early for Jed's 45 minute Devendra/DFA mash-up (kidding).

so they're done ripping off The Bends for this album?

does that really say "philthy" but have nothing to do with philadelphia? BAAAARF.

hmm... don't think the last one sounded like The Bends whatsoever. much much more lush and orchestrated.
i actually don't hear the Naive Melody rip really either to be perfectly honest.

nice live ver of Shallow from earlier this year:

Have you never listened to South, or never listened to The Bends?

haha, south. i didnt even know they did anything. i picked up some promo by them in 2001. this song also sounds like "love will tear us apart" it's alright, but i dunno if i'd listen to it twice! you know who ripped off "this must be the place" ? tom vek on "nothing but green lights"
Score = 0
yes, plenty. i've seen South twice even.
now Muse, if you wanna talk about bands who sound like Bends-era Radiohead (not as much anymore, bit heavier, but still), yet they seem to get a free pass it seems.
you can't say this new song sounds like Bends-era Radiohead, if you do you're deaf, sorry.

the only thing the last South record has in common with The Bends is the high quality of its music, and maybe the fact that boths bands are from the U.K. Soundwise, its a ridiculous comparison, and about as far from a 'rip-off' as one could imagine. 'With the Tides' is far more lush for starters.
I like that new track quite a bit. There's definitely elements of Talking Heads, 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' and maybe even some 'Love Vigilantes' among other things, but somehow everything gels to sound very fresh and compact. Excellent production too.

Sorry solace and dave g., I was directing my comment at marathonpacks and am a huge South fan (I have signed copies of W.t.T. and F.H.O.I. for the time they played Atlanta). That's what happens when I write comments while studying for the MCAT.

...as long as we're all in agreement.

i like it--sounds tight! and i have been a long-time south fan. it's all jingly-jangly, which i'm a lover of. longish non-intro intro though.
one of those under-rated bands, imho.
thanks for a nice listen at boring work this afternoon!

Something happened to South between album 1 and 2, and it wasn't good. This sounds like more of the same. Shame, as I really used to like these guys. Something about it is so MOR, bland, blahhhh.
Score = 0
Actually, I just remembered that the Vek track kind of sounds like "life during wartime" not "this must be the place" but Four Tet's "Smile Aounr The Face" sounds like "this must be the place"

Tom, guess we'll have to disagree, cuz i like the last 2 South records way more than the first 2 ;)

oh, and by that i meant at the new one leaked a few days ago ;)

I hope these guys pick up a fanbase with their new stuff - cause they're great guys.

does anyone know where the new album can be downloaded?

Don't bother going out of your way for the new one. It sucks. The best I've heard about it is "i hope it grows on me." Really ordinary.
