New St. Vincent - "The Strangers"

thumbnail icon: New St. Vincent - "The Strangers"

Soon after we got a closeup of St. Vincent's new album, videos of Annie going one-woman-band style on the new material began trickling out from her performance at Noise Pop. That was promising, but pretend you didn't see it and take this lead MP3: She's old hat at transmitting her shifty, knotty, orchestrated music live via guitars and triggering foot pedals, but crappy YouTubes don't compare to hearing "The Strangers"'s fairy tale woodwinds surrender to stomping fuzzpedal delirium (see 2:30) in studio form.

Via St. Vincent's Twitter, obvs. Actor is out 5/4 via 4AD. Annie face:

There's a few chances to see it live at SXSW:

03/18 Austin, TX @ Central Presbyterian Church (4AD SXSW showcase)
03/20 Austin, TX @ Antone's (Billions Corporation SXSW showcase)

Another gem/masterpiece, but could we expect any less? If this isn't album of the year, I'll be so surprised.

Best new song I've heard all year!

Her foot pedal triggerring & looping live is effective, but I hope Annie eventually forms a full band with strings to play her music in a live context. Her songs & arrangements are oh-so deserving of grandiose, human-based live instrumentation.

well daniel hart does play violin with her live and while it may not be an orhestra he does a pretty good job filling out the strings.

2009 is the greatest year in music ever. I feel so spoiled.
