New Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks - "Baltimore"

We always want more Pavement. That's just how it is. We were kidding when we said VH1's '90s list needed more (c'mon chillun, as if those VHvoters had ever been slanted or enchanted) but now, as if responding to our faux-moaning, SM & his Jicks (one of whom is still Janet Weiss) went and released an MP3 of a new tune, "Baltimore." The track has Malkmus rip into a few of those rangy, gorgeous guitar solos, knowing just when to drop his wonderfully articulated, Cheshire Cat pronouncements. Toward the end, we get to the heart of Baltimore's appeal for Mr. M: "I'm in love with a soldier from Baltimore." Wait, Ray Lewis?

Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks - "Baltimore" (MP3)

How about that mid-point funky part? "You criticize life / you criticize fame," etc ... songs mean a lot when songs are bought, et al. So good. This all reminds us that the last Malkmus solo album was really good. You can also find the song at the increasingly check-it-every-day Matablog. Props to you, Gerard.

Real Emotional Trash is out in March on Matador.

Quit Your Day Job: Ungdomskulen
