New Timbaland (Featuring Justin Timberlake & Nelly Furtado) - "Give It To Me"

It's Timbaland's time to call in some favors from his promiscuous and sexy friends on this track from the producer's solo album, due out next year. Not surprisingly, the beat is awesome once it kicks in, but then we're smacked with Nelly's vox and umm ... why does hip-hop hate melody so much?!

We no like. But allegedly Timberlake's part is about Janet Jackson, and that's the sort of shit-stirring we can get behind!

Could you speak up and stop mumbling
I dont think you're even clear
When you're sitting on the top
it's hard to hear you from way up there.
I saw you tryin to act cute on TV
"Just let me clear the air."
We missed you on the charts last week
Damn that's right, you wasn't there

Now if sexy never left
then why is everybody on my shit
Don't hate on me just because
you didn't come up with it
So if you see us in the club
go on and walk the other way
Cause our run will never be over
not at least until we say

Never underestimate the divisive power of the nipple.

"Why does hip hop hate melody so much?!"

That's the fucking stupidest thing I've ever read on this website, especially in relationship to this melody, which is a melody, sung without autotune, with as much precision (and written with at least as much sophistication) as half the rock bands Stereogum fucking loves.

Jesus.

Yeah i totally agree with somebody. Half the bands you love don't have any sort of melody and let's not talk about pitch and their range...let's not even get into how they can't really SING... clap your hands say yeah!?<~ wtf is that, singing?
wolfparade<~ which i am a huge fan of. But your voice cracking when you get to a higher range makes for a lovely melody.
I'm not even a fan of hiphop, but stop shitting on it.

And you thought you could make fun of Nelly Furtado without consequence. For shame...

Maybe it's because the name Furtado is already reminiscent of a crap-filled burrito.

Is it possible he's actually addressing Fed-Ex? WRT the line about the album not being on the charts last week, we all know how he caught a major brick.

At first I was going to say "Somebody missed the tongue-in-cheek part of this post", but then I realized that one of the people "not getting the funny" is NAMED 'Somebody', so now I'm really just not sure what to do.

Though, given how serious his/her tone is, the suggestion will likely be made that I go fuck myself.

"Why Does hip hop hate melody so much?".

That’s a totally justified statement, as long as you point out that most new rock music, especially indie rock does, as well. That doesn't necessarily make it worse than anything else (you can have rhythm without having melody), its just that hip hop is far more often than not, based on rhythm and not melody. Look at its origins, groups like grandmaster flash and the furious five, and run dmc. No melody whatsoever. It’s not really a bad thing, but its totally true.

Was Timbo dissing on Scott Storch? It seems like he was dissing on somebody and I heard something about how "you are just a pianoman" or something of that sort. Wasn't Scott Storch the keyboardist in The Roots before he became a big-time producer?

I'm not sure who JT is dissin'. I thought at first Janet and there are a few reasons why it would be her, like her cd didnt do that great but JT says "last week", and Fed-Ex his "album" came sales were released last week so you would think its Federline he's talking about. But..."let me clear the air" is where I get completely stumped because apparently Janet said that when addressing the NippleGate incident. Im not sure who its a diss to. But he sure has got us talkin'!

Hey All...keep in mind that just cuz the song was leaked now doesn't mean the "last week" reference needs to be taken literally. Janet's album was released about six-to-seven weeks ago, so it still fits the time frame from when they would've recorded the song.

Justin timberlake like Beckham 97% of their sales are based on their looks and birth and 3% on talent and skills. Beckham was never a superstar but cuase of his looks they call him a superstar...
On the otherhand you have Prince, on of the most creative people in the music industry. 150% talent. Justin you are not and will never be in the same league as Prince. You can make more money than him but you can match his talent.

r you serious?! JT has some seriously eclectic taste in music and if he's that bad then why the hell did justified do so well? sure there's a lot of publicity, but if it was that bad, recording companies wouldn't take the risk to produce him, no matter how "good looking" he is... and as far as prince is concerned, sure he's a different league, but timberlake isn't trying or claims to be Prince... And as far as beckham is concerned, he's still a very good soccer player, again, if he wasn't he wouldn'tbe where he is, obviously there's better than him, but if you know so much, then why don't you go play against him, see how you go...

HIGH TIME THIS WAS ADDRESSED!

I only read a couple of comments but some hit on something that I think the indie world needs to examine... the lack of decent vocalists who have decent pitch and can stay on key!

Someone discussed CLYHSY, I agree, the songwriting = solid, the singer's vocal inflection, phrasing = unique and notewothy, the sound actually coming out of his mouth? = horrible!

Similarly, the newest Unicorns/Islands album, anybody actually able to sit through that without tearing your ears out? honestly? I mean the vocalist searches for every note. Its like michael jordan's attempt at batting, swings to hit it and misses everytime

Notable exceptions: Isaac Brock, Dan Bejar and most definitely Spencer Krug. Why do these guys get a pass? because their shit actually sounds decent with the music.

Oh and Tom Waits is immune to the above discussion simply because he is Tom Waits.

...looks like I'm joining the party a week late, but I fully agree with the thrashing delivered to whoever made that self-aggrandizing "post" about the "lack of melody" in hip-hop. I like left of the mainstream as much as anyone, but the indie community has *no* perch to look down upon when bemoaning melody in contemporary music. There's good and bad on both sides of the fence. And for that matter, I consider *both* Ys and Futuresexy/Lovesounds to be two of the best albums of 2006 in their respective categories (folk and r/n/b). Get off your high horse, anonymous Stereogum editor, and you won't make the mistake of assuming your readers are nearly as pretentious as you were, and as you assumed them to be. :^)

here it goes:

" seen ya try to switch it up but girl you ain't got to" <-- nelly disses fergie from switching her style from her old group wild orchids to her new "image" in BEP

"I'm a real producer and you just the piano man" <--timbo dissin scott storch because if youve ever seen footage of storch in the studio, all he does is play his little korg and uses that wah-wah type knob. where as timb plays every instrument on his track from beatbox to even using live drum kits himself.

justin's verse is pretty self explanatory. prince said "Who said Sexy's back...Sexy never left partner" at a concert a little while ago, so he shouldnt think that shit would go unheard.

janet is loving the attention from this cuz her album pretty much flopped. i mean come on, doing a song with Khia? She pretty set herself up for it. I think her brother Mike could put out an album have better numbers than her.

Going back to the whole "stop ruining music" thing, all of these people obviously can do something right. They may not have a classicaly trained voice, but they can still hold a tune or else no one would have signed them. I wouldn't say anything about them unless I was personally willing to go head to head and show everyone that I'm really better, which I and most people are not. So don't kill the vibe. Let them sing.

I think the whole idea that J.T. brought sexy back is stupid. It is a adjetive and I dont think an adjetive can go out of style. He is using the phrase like people stopped being sexy and now he brought it back with a song? Well, in my opinion, shy is gone, so I will come out with a song and bring SHY back. Come'on people. And Prince is dope. Prince is superior to everything J.T. is. And the success of J.T. and the other mousketeers is reliant on the fact that modern tast in music has taken a downfall. Just like it did when the New Kids on THe Block came out. These singers are also focused on a generation of newbies-their main audence are teenagers. I don't deny J.T.'s singing ability-he can sing nicely and Christina Agulars sounds ok if you don't pay too much attention to her voice and pick up that she sounds like a white girl immitating a black womans voice, but case in point-Britney Spears. How the fuck did she get so big? Same reason other non-singing people did like Lindsey Lohan-out tast in music has went to shit and we settle for poppy sugary gay sparkle wearing sissy ass music. Prince's talet, much like the great oldies of yesteryears (like the ones that are constantly sampled, including Princes') will be eternally appreciated in years to come. DO you think anyone is going to sample "Hit me baby one more time"? Or "Sexy Back"? Yeah, a few years from now I will dig out my "Opps I did it Again" album
