New Tom Waits's Nanny - "Intelligentactile 101"

Couple of things worth noting about Jesca Hoop: Stewart Copeland bangs his drums on one track, she'll be opening for the Polyphonic Spree during the month of shows from 6/23-7/23, she's got a slightly left-of-center take on hummable pop, and she took care of Tom Waits's kids. Bloggable by any stretch, that.

During her stint as the Waits clan's nanny, she converted Tom into a Hoop-aphile, getting him to say, "Jesca Hoop's music is like a four-sided coin. She is an old soul, like a black pearl, a good witch or a red moon. Her music is like going swimming in a lake at night." Tom passed her demos on to Nic Harcourt who spun 'em incessantly, and now she's hanging with the Police and touring the country with DeLaughter's black-clad cult. Kismet's as good a name for her debut as any. And hey, her tunes ain't bad, either! "Intellgentactile" (which isn't a word) is perfect for the Triple-A set with enough quirks to keep it fresh, and enough charm in Jesca's vox to sound like a four-sided coin (OK we have no idea what that means either, but Tom said it so it's gotta be true).

I've actually been following her music for a little while since her first EP came out a couple of years ago through live recordings.. I'm a little surprised in how 'modern pop' this single is because her live sound is more like baroque-inflected acoustic folk and old-timey 1940s-ish sounding stuff (search for 'jesca hoop big fish' on youtube for an example).. still, I like it, good to have a varied sound I suppose.

She used to be Tom Waits' nanny, eh? Well I used to Billy Squier's dog walker, so where's my record deal?

i too have been casually following her thru her live performances for a while, and i too am surprised by the turn of style. i didnt enjoy this at all, but ive loved her previous stuff. i definitely recommend looking up her live work. it blows this out of the water.

"purty," maybe, but that earflaphat/wifebeater look is purty...hackneyed.

She's pretty and doesn't sound bad. Not quite my cup of tea, though. "VH1derful" was right on the mark.

Check out this, (and the other archive.org recordings) if you want to hear why I think she's talented and worth following:

For everyone hearing these now songs and not understanding what the buzz is about, go find her songs Silverscreen, Havoc in Heaven and Big Fish.

The new songs seem shamefully devoid of the vintage quirkiness that led me to fall in love with her in the first place, though 'enemy' stand out as the best of the bunch.
