New Torche - "Healer"

thubmnail icon: New Torche - "Healer"

We mentioned being blown away by the heavy stoner goodness of Torche this past CMJ. Well, the Steve Brooks-fronted Miami/Atlanta quartet's superb, Kurt Ballou-produced second full-length Meanderthal -- a mix of math angles, Melvins-esque sludge, and full-on turbo-powered pop hookery -- is out today. So we're mentioning 'em again. As far as the pop songs go, one of our favorites is "Healer" and its windswept, Superchunk-on-Foo Fighters propulsion. Foos, you ask? No, we're not fucking with you.

Torche - "Healer" (MP3)

If that's not heavy enough, take a listen to how "Amnesian" collides with the title track: The entire album's streaming here.

Meanderthal is out via Hydra Head. We can't say this enough: Try to catch them live. They have a number of shows coming up with Philly legends Stinking Lizaveta and a few less with doomy Austin Road Warriors the Sword:

Those are some weird look dudes in Torche. The guy on the left looks like a cross between Ron Jeremy and David Berkowitz.

I saw these guys open for Jesu, and they were the highlight of the night by far. This album is really, really good. They have a good handle on hitting it hard where it counts, pulling it back in for the hook and throwing out some tricks much like Cave In used to do between their transition from heavier material to Jupiter-era. Metal Album of the Year, me thinks.

Don't forget the song 'Fat Waves'...starts off like a glorious pop song and those FAT WAVES OF DISTORTION work their way in towards the end of the song.

One of the best of the year for certain.

Comment spam, really Lisa?

This isn't MySpace. Nor is it 1999. Get a clue.

Maybe I should give these guys another chance... I saw them supporting Mogwai in New York in 2006, and they were terrible. This song's not that bad, though
