New TV On The Radio - "I Was A Lover"

Ha, even my Ashlee-loving wife hates that Paris Hilton single. I tried the "But imagine it was Gwen Stefani!" line ... no go.

So in an effort to prove I haven't lost my mind, here's the opposite of "Stars Are Blind" -- the least accessible, but most inventive tune from the forthcoming TV On The Radio. Here the band's layered hip-hop beats, a chopped-up string sample, and dissonant riffs in an atonal exercise in difficult listening. I'm just amazed they heard a song in the strange combination of sounds. There's even a left-field piano break in the middle. "I was a lover / before this war" goes Kyp's falsetto refrain. The cacophony suits his politics.

Amazing track, and one of my favorite off the album. It only falls short of "Let the Devil in".

One of the best albums of the year. Amazing. The production on this track reminds me a bit of some of DJ Premier's work.

The trick is you can't tell the person they're listening to Paris. I had my friend listen to it and she was jammin'. Then I said it was Paris Hilton and she freaked out. "I DIDN'T EVEN LIKE IT THAT MUCH I SWEAR!"

Extremely tweaker but not bad nonetheless.

I didn't know this was new...got the track a loooong time ago! Anyway, I suppose it's rather interesting. I dismissed this at first but now that I'm hearing it again, maybe I'll give TV another go. Thanks!

This is exactly what I was hoping the new TVOTR! would sound like.

this sounds like some art school college band fucking around in their rec room trying to be "experimental" - can't any band just sample fuzz guitar and horn loops over a simple beat like this? is the dude's falsetto just the reason people think this is unique? - i don't get why TVOTR have gotten to be where they are? cuz they got hip glass wearin dudes with big hair? i happened to catch them once at mercury lounge (i was there to see someone else) and they were the most boring band I had ever seen live - again I guess having lots of friends and hanger ons in the nyc rock scene counts for something
