New Young Rival - "Your Island"

thubmnail icon: New Young Rival - "Your Island"

Young Rival are a young quartet from Hamilton, Ontario. We posted the dusky, Zombies-esque "4:15" a couple months ago. This time we have "Your Island" -- the pop's more sugary, but there's still a vintage feel to the guitar sound and vocalist Aron D'Alesio delivery. We still don't know too much about YR, and haven't really pinned their overall sound down yet. For instance, another new track, "Another Nobody," is straight-up garage rock. They play the Mercury Lounge tonight, so if you're in the NYC area, you could maybe catch them, possibly figure out their deal.

You can do some further investigations at their blog and at MySpace. Their new six-song self-titled debut EP is just out and will be available on this current tour.

I just wanted to say that these great dudes from Hamilton have played my venue in Windsor, ON (across from Detroit) and they are some of the most upstanding musicians in the country. I see them all in my little building, from Final Fantasy to Tokyo Police Club, and these guys are one of my favourites...
The guys used to be named The Ride Theory, and they have a previously released album that garnered tons of fans, and now with this renaming, and high-end recording, I am psyched to have them at Phog in September!
Go see them if you get the chance. Sharp dressed, fleet-fingered, high-energy Canadians are certainly worth the visit.

Band To Watch: Blank Dogs

Blank Dogs are actually singular: It's the insanely prolific one-man Brooklyn-based band of Mr. Blank Dog. We don't know too much about the biography of the guy behind the bedroom new-wave pop/punk and he's usually covering his face with masks...
