New Animal Collective Video - "Summertime Clothes"

thumbnail icon: New Animal Collective Video - "Summertime Clothes"

Today's Bonnaroo line-up's got Dirty Projectors, Animal Collective, Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Grizzly Bear, and TV On The Radio all back to back. So basically Brooklynroo. With its nursery rhyme melody and visceral cruel summer imagery, Animal Collective's "Summertimes Clothes" is the most accessible track on an album praised for being not entirely inaccessible. The colorful, trippy video, directed by longtime collaborator Danny Perez, features pulsing lights, fire and ice, and Brooklyn's bedsheet-clad FLEX dance crew (as seen on TV) writhing inside plastic bubbles. It's sort of freaking me out! I probably shouldn't have eaten so many peanut butter cups! Anyway, my unicorn is melting so enjoy the freak show...

The "Summertime Clothes" single (12" and digital) is out 7/7 and features three remixes, including this killer boogie funk take from LA's Dâm-Funk.

You don't think My Girls is more accessible? Both great songs, though.

Close call. I think this one, but "My Girls" is pretty poppy too.

Animal Collective are incapable of making a decent music video. Dream with me for a second: a new AC video directed by Hype Williams that is a scene-by-scene recreation of Notorious B.I.G.'s "Hypnotize"

HappyParts values this group’s sound more so then the the Dirty P’s. HappyParts digs the Beach Boys Gristle. Plus the search engine optimization factor is amazin’. I’ll be doing a scientific test over the next 3 weeks: Bear Vs. Projector Vs. Collective. Who will win the cage match?

This video was such a disappointment for me. I was hoping for some greater interpretation of or meaningful insight into one of my favorite songs of the year. Or even just hipsters falling in love in the wee hours of the Brooklyn night whilst playing pranks on drunk frat guys and late-night food patrons. Instead we got what looks like a FLEX fan vid/art school project/self-promoting video where the music takes the backseat.

Anyone ever watch Spaced? There was one episode where Brian is invited to an art show by his ex-partner (VULVA!!!!). It culminates into a performance art piece that can only be described as "weird for weird's sake". From the DVD special features, Edgar Wright and co. were trying to poke fun at the supposed "genius" of postmodern art gone too far. It was almost as if they were saying Duchamp already did it, now let's move on. This video would be the exact thing they would make fun of, and that makes me sad.

Was referring to Marcel Duchamp, who is not known for watercolors. Unless Vulva is known for watercolors. But last I checked, (s)he was a fictional character.

No points for D.I.Y. production values? I thought you kids weren’t corporate. You can’t get Jerry Bruckheimer videos without mass market appeal. Can’t you see they’re just giving you a chance to “get it” while yr not-as-cool-friends are like: “that video is wack” you can be like “you just don’t understand the deep phenomenology of dance and movement”.
Feel free to disagree, but if yr counting on a video to help bring more meaning and insight into a song, yr probably not even getting yr ankles wet in it.

And is it really so surprising that an Animal Collective video would turn out weird, and obtuse? The “Water Curses” video –which owned- was a 4 minute optical illusion. If you ask me, these guys are doing you a favor with this one.
I could have done without the liquid spraying hair-flip, which looked retarded even back in the “head like a hole” days, but it’s sufficiently colorful, sufficiently weird. Win.

At first this video was horrible. I saw the thumbnail and my mind was filled with a lot of cool imagery that they could have used. Then I actually watched it. I have to say I'm glad it's nothing definite though. I have a vivid image in my mind of what this song describes, and I like that the song is the band's, but mine to interpret still. Maybe the song would have been ruined having a different face to attach to a man lying in his pool-like bed, gazing at his flaming walls.
