New Black Dice - "Glazin"

thubmnail icon: New Black Dice - "Glazin"

Longtime Brooklyn sound alchemists, the ATP-bound, I.U.D.-assisting Black Dice's fifth "official" full-length REPO is right around the corner: It's again the Broken Ear Record/Load Blown trio of Eric and Bjorn Copeland with Aaron Warren and judging from the lead track "Glazin," they're continuing to add warped layers to that jubilant sprung-reverb island sound. It's an excellent piece of shiny psychedelia: Upfront distorted vocals, generated bird chirps, and more helium twists than ever in each shuffling moment. If they gave it a video in the vein of "Smiling Off," it would induce twice as many seizures.

Black Dice - "Glazin" (MP3)

To stick with recent singles: It's "Kokomo" sinking to the bottom of the ocean and discovering a sicker groove. The context:

01 "Nite Creme"
02 "Glazin"
03 "Earnings Plus Interest"
04 "Whirligig"
05 "La Cucaracha"
06 "Idiots Pasture"
07 "Lazy TV"
08 "Buddy"
09 "Ten Inches"
10 "Chicken Shit"
11 "Vegetable"
12 "Urban Super Mist"
13 "Ultra Vomit Craze"
14 "Gag Shack"

REPO is out 4/7 via Paw Tracks. The glazed cover:

Black Dice is the single worst band I have ever seen live in my entire life. I have not listened to a single one of their songs since, because even thinking about them makes me want to tear my ears off. Fuck Black Dice and their godawful noise.

It sounds like it was made by a group of guys who grew up on mainstream Cock Rock, discovered musique concrete in their late teens and thought, "Wow, weird sounds" but completely missed the point that these sounds were saying something.

Or, in short, retro chewed up tape loop sounds do not equal worthwhile music.

Black dice are the only of the 'black' bands to actually do something interesting. People who don't understand their kind of musics are typical, but I don't get why they have to raise such a fuss when someone writes a short blurb about them on a blog. Peeps get Jeaaaalouuuss I think.

What's typical is implying that people who don't like Black Dice and similar musicians simply "don't understand their kind of musics".

Did it not occur to you that some people listen to music that's more complex than Black Dice and therefore their problem is with the pseudo-intellectual 'weird for the sake of weird'-ness of their music?

Yes, music that's more complex than Black Dice, such as Animal Collective, Arcade Fire, and Clipse.

No need to hate.

There is music outside the world of Stereogum-covered musicians.

Complex like Stockhausen, John Coltrane, Albert Ayler, Pierre Henry, Edgar Varese, Xenekis, Ligeti; i.e. avant-garde classical and jazz.

did the black dice find a monkey, crawl up its arse and then ponder if they could make a better sound than the monkey, which i might add, they failed miserably at .

I have Load Blown and I can't really get into it. I find that Black Dice are a really hard band to enjoy but I appreciate their own original sound and style. Hearing this new track makes me happy that they refuse to conform for anyone. Black Dice don't seem like they plan on making a pop record any time soon which is nice because they're not alienating long term fans.

in order to get through the album, it cost me two litres of scotch and a blotting sheet of acid, and you know what .... it still sounded shit.

I've loved Black Dice since I first heard tracks off of Creature Comforts and then proceeded to play them on my "alternative" college radio show years ago. It's bloody nice to let loose some noise that isn't your average 2.5 minute indie rock band that the station plays all damn day. I'm not really seeing any "pseudo intellectual" aspect with them either... surely big wigs like Stockhausen and Xenakis and Varese all have their "weirdness." And I don't really think that's a bad thing, either. Maybe we should analyze sound using different, less subjective terms?
