New Coldplay - "Violet Hill"
This is the sound of Coldplay trying to grow some balls. The long awaited introduction to Eno-fied Coldplay comes today, via previously announced FREE MP3 (for just one week, because major labels can't have a good idea without saddling it with a bad one). Don't let the atmospheric and ambient noise swell out front scare you too much, "Violet Hill" is a rocker's march, with Eno dialing Buckland's guitars into a more biting/less delayed crunch than A Rush Of Blood and X&Y (check the alarm siren bends, etc.). On the other hand, it looks like Brian's still OK with Mr. Martin's favored outro trick of gentle voice/piano chorus reprise. Two listen verdict: definitely less likely to put you to sleep. A few more notes to that guitar solo might've helped. Download it here or stream below.

As a pretty big fan of Coldplay, I'm a bit disappointed. The jury is still out for me on this one. I think the song really leans on the mix and the droning guitars/synth pads. Strip away all of the production and I'm not sure if you'll find anything special here.

I think the song is a great step in the right direction for this album. It is a move away from Rush of Blood or X&Y. It shows the Brian Eno influence.
And honestly, what gives with the album art knock? First of all, would it matter what it looked like? It would still be criticized b/c it seems to be "cool" to hate on Coldplay. Secondly, I find it to be a pleasant change from the previous three album covers that all look the same. Change is good. This is clearly an attempt to follow a Beatles's type path - not that I am saying this is in the same level, but that is clearly what they are trying to do.

The new song is all right. Better than X&Y, I agree. And while the influence of recent Radiohead is clear, it's not that annoying when Coldplay-ized, surprisingly. And do I dare detect an improvement in Chris Martin's lyrics?
So what's the problem, then? Well, it's that Chris Martin still tends to rely too much on his falsetto moments and the same vocal riffs. Everything is well constructed, but what will always set Coldplay part from, say, Radiohead (and here, let us end the comparison) is that they will never be as daring in their sheer musicality. Chris Martin at least 75% of the time goes for the cheap and easy hooks. Rush of Blood had the least number of easy melodic resolutions, and that's why it is still their best album, musically. (Parachutes is their best lyrically, in my opinion.)
This song shows promise for the album. Cross your fingers and all that.

I would just like to say how refreshing the recent comments about Coldplay have been. Someone referred to a "backlash to the backlash", but I think the almost overwhelmingly positive (or at least, not negative) response represents an open-mindedness and honesty that has been traditionally absent in the blogosphere. It may be the typical Chris Martin trick of quiet piano outro, but this time the chords and rhythm of the piano are more complex. Kudos for that.

do you even know how to play a coldplay song? because if you did you would know that the majority of their songs use complex chords. i know because i own all the official tab books, not just reading the shitty transcriptions of their songs done by kurt cobain wannabes on the internet who don't know how to play anything besides a major power chord.
i would say that more songs than not by coldplay are in alternate tunings... i learned countless of amazing tunings thanks to liking coldplay. they also have a tendency to use really complex and jazzy chords....like maj7th, aug4th, add9ths, etc etc etc....

Most bands, I think, draw from smaller pool of material for their live shows, and I think a lot of bands have one set list that works through their whole tour. If you play completely different music every night, how will rotating, road-only band members and lighting and sound guys keep up? And I'm not only talking about arena acts (although an arena show like Coldplay or - dare I make the comparison - Radiohead certainly comes with a huge assortment of stagehands and technical logistics that would make it a nightmare to play something new on a whim), but smaller, stereogum-friendly indie acts as well. Just this year I've seen Throw Me The Statue and John Vanderslice turn down audience requests from the stage because they simply haven't rehearsed something. And I don't hold it against these guys; that's just the way it is.
That said, how many Coldplay shows have you been to, Kevin? I've seen them six times, and for the record, I've never seen the same set list twice. Of course they've always played In My Place, and they've closed with Fix You since X&Y came out. But I've seen them do new songs, and I've seen them omit hits like Yellow or The Scientist in favor of something they hadn't played in a while like A Rush Of Blood to the Head or Green Eyes.
If you're aiming to provoke, congratulations. But if you're honestly trying to make an argument, man, pick your battles. I know the internet is free and un-policed, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't filter yourself and try not to contribute to the glut.

A huge Radiohead fan for close to fifteen years, I have wanted to like Coldplay since their first record. I thought it had some good tunes, and I thought Rush of Blood was a bit better. In the end, one should realize you can't deny good songs, and Coldplay has written several and utilized good production. I finally had the chance to see them a couple years ago though, and I have to say, it was horrible. Very boring, and very overpriced. They didn't even play for 90 minutes, and used backing tracks the whole time that didn't even appear self generated to mimic their studio efforts. I was very disappointed, and could not care less about this album.

to me half the problem of this new song is the mixing of it.
whatever they were trying to do with his voice this time around doesn't work for him.

Fix you is brilliant song, because they were able to break out of their "musical dullness" (some would call it). That was also in my opinion, one of their best mixed songs. and i hear from everyone who has ever seen them that they are amazing live.

I really don't mind this song, and since I have no allegiance to Coldplay, what I'm going to say next doesn't really bother me all that much: Ok, listen to the Billy Joel song "The Stranger," then listen to the 80's hairband one-hit-wonder Kix's "Don't Close Your Eyes." What you have is Coldplay's "The Stranger not Closing his Eyes" aka "Violet Hll." Sorry, but what a ripoff.

What an amazing song! It's so mesmerizing I could hear over & over! Coldplay truly is a gift for our souls. Anyone picking it apart, figures and what do you do for a living? Yeah, I know you don't even work! Zero talent and yet being a critic....and that's a wrap folks!!!!!
