New Metric Video - "Help, I'm Alive"
We first heard Metric's excellent single in acoustic form, soundtracking a montage of confessional interviews with singer/songwriter Emily Haines. In the video, posted on the band's site last fall, we learned Emiliy had been on a soul-searching sojourn in Buenos Aires (go Boca Juniors) after contemplating quitting writing altogether. "I just felt like I didn't want to write that script again for myself, of like, how complex can things be?" she explained (sort of). "It was like I took it as complex as I could. My life sucked." :( The songs eventually composed in Argentina were among "the simplest and clearest writing" of her life, though, and "Help, I'm Alive" with its vulnerable refrain ("If I stumble/ They're gonna eat me alive/ Can you hear my heart beating like a hammer?") was the first completed. "It pretty much sums up the state I've been in since I came here, I guess since I was honest with myself and accepted that like I'm really scared. And I don't know where my life is going. And I don't know what I'm doing." You've already heard the new wavey full-band version (and perhaps the whole album). Now "Help"'s got a music video and dancey remix (courtesy of The Twelves). The bare bones version, with Emily on piano and James on acoustic guitar, is still my favorite, so you'll find that after the jump too.

That Twelves remix is really great. I love everything I've heard from this album.
Score = 1
Hmm...only after watching the video did I realize how overlong this song is. We get it, your heart keeps beating like a hammer and if you stumble they're going to eat you alive...no need to repeat it for another minute at the end. (I still like the band, this song just bugs me.)
Score = -3
i hate to say it but i agree. i like the acoustic version and the remix by the twelves way better.
despite being slightly annoyed by this ..i loooooove this band. emily haines is a boss.

The new album is good solid pop, nothing particularly original or exciting but worth checking out.
Score = 6
I tend to fall into the habit of listening to 2-3 bands exclusively for a while. Then I happen to randomly click on a post like this one which sends me into a full-blown "Crap, while I was listening to stuff I already know, I've been missing great music" panic.
This happens again and again and I never learn.
So I guess I'll be listening to Metric a lot for a while. Thank you for this.

Make your way back to "Old World Underground". It's their best album.

It really does sound like she's singing "Beating like a hamburger." for most of the song. Or maybe hamburgler. You decide. Silly song.

The music is great. The video, not so much...

It sounds like she says, "my heart keeps beating like a hamburger". This totally changed my entire perspective on this song!
